No cheating: MCI about to randomize all online testing

Remember those photocopied answer sheets you use to take Marine Corps Institute exams? They're about to be useless - at least if you take your exams on the Web.

On Friday, the Corps' online version of the multiple choice exams will be completely randomized, according to a statement released Wednesday.

The change from MCI's current digital exam to the Random Online Exam - which includes randomly generated answer choices - "ushers a new period of academic rigor and integrity," the statement said.

"The bottom line is, cheaters beware," Terry Franus, director of the institute, told Marine Corps Times last fall, when the Corps was initially gearing up for the transition.

The institute still allows Marines to mail in their exams. However, the newer Web-based exams are designed to feed results into the Corps' promotion system as soon as the tests are completed, according to the statement.

The immediate transfer of results cuts down the time it takes to update a Marine's composite score each time he completes an exam. Marines mailing the exams face a much slower processing time, which may ultimately affect their promotions.
