Soldier Thanks Local Students for Silly String
By Cathy Gandolfo

STRATFORD, N.J. - January 30, 2007 - The students who met him in the flesh call him a hero, but for Todd Shriver, it was just a chance to say thank you.

The Army Specialist paid a special visit to St. Luke's School during his two-week leave from Iraq.

The 28-year-old combat engineer came to answer the children's questions and to say thank you for donating silly string.

Since November, the students and countless other people have collected silly string to send to Iraq where soldiers and marines use it to help spot booby trap trip wires.

Collecting cans of silly string became a mission for Todd's mother, Marcelle.

At the Shriver's Stratford home the number of cans of silly string continues to grow with more arriving every day.

"I think we've sent over 20,000 cans so far and we have at least another 10,000 in the warehouse," said Marcelle.

When Specialist Shriver returns to Iraq, he knows he'll be taking the prayers and good wishes of this community with him.

His mom will make sure the silly string won't be far behind.
