We don't find ourselves using those two words together very often.

Muddy men with guns and dogs, that's the word picture when we think of woodsy camouflage clothing.

But one look at this little dolly _ her name is June _ and you see why outdoor outfitters are adding whole sections to their stores and catalogs for little ones who can barely walk, much less slog through the forest on a wintry morn.

The juxtaposition of the rough and rugged with soft babyness is what gives the look its yin-yang charm. Kids in camo are, quite simply, adorable

"You wear the best, now they can too," says the new Cabela's (cabelas.com) wish book that came in the mail recently.

Let's see. There's baby bunting to mimic hardwoods. And hunting booties that lace up just like Daddy's.

The little girl's camouflage one-piece playsuit has white-eyelet rumba ruffles on the derriere. We vetoed the ruffles for June, the daughter of our colleague Heidi Stevens, who seems quite at home perched on a fake limb in this unisex model ($14.95).

Now comes word that there's even newborn camo footwear so Mom can bring the infant home in style-with diapers tucked in the "realtree hardwoods green" camouflage diaper bag.

Place camobaby in her crib outfitted in camo sheets with a camo dust ruffle and she's hiding in plain sight.

Why not? Camouflage, whether for hunters in Wisconsin's Northwoods or Marines in a dusty Iraqi outpost, is designed to protect the wearers.

And all parents' first concern and highest obligation is to protect their children, to keep them out of harm's way. If only we could be sure that dressing our loved ones top-to-bottom in camo clothes would guarantee their safety.

Alas, to believe that any clothing could have those magical, protective powers would make us the babes in the woods.
