JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — More leathernecks with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 will deploy to Iraq this week, according to a Corps press release.
More than 130 Marines with the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.-based squadron are leaving Thursday, marking the last group of leathernecks in the squadron to deploy to Al Asad Air Base, Iraq.
Over the past two weeks, about 110 MWHS-2 Marines have left for what will be a year-long deployment for the squadron. While in Iraq, the squadron will operate the Tactical Air Control Center to support air operations for the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Other Cherry Point squadrons are preparing to leave for Iraq to support the aviation combat mission for II MEF, according to the release.
