Conway revives Marine Mail

Got a constructive suggestion for the commandant? Now’s your chance.

Though it never went away completely, Marine Mail — a program meant to “encourage creativity and innovation by providing each Marine ... regardless of grade, a method by which their positive and professional ideas could be heard” — hasn’t gotten much play for the past few years.

However, Commandant Gen. James Conway issued AlMar message 001/007 on Jan. 11, reinvigorating the program instituted by former Commandant Gen. Charles Krulak in 1995.

“Marines have always demonstrated extensive resourcefulness and innovation,” Conway wrote. “Some of the best ideas have come from our most junior Marines. Marine Mail exists to ensure all of you have a venue to express professional ideas that will benefit our Corps.”

The criteria for Marine Mail is posed as four questions:

å What are we not doing that we should be doing?

å What are we doing that we should do differently?

å What are we doing that we should not be doing?

å What new concept or idea should the Marine Corps investigate to improve its war-fighting capability?

Submissions may be made by e-mail to marine.mail.fct@usmc.mil; by mail at Marine Mail (CMC), HQMC, 3000 Marine Corps Pentagon, Washington, DC 20350-3000; or by fax to (703) 693-1284 (DSN 223).

However, Conway cautions that Marine Mail “is not intended to serve as a substitute for the chain of command and other reporting procedures.”
