A reminder for you 1st MAW Marines, the 2007 reunion will be in June in Branson, MO. More info at: http://firstmaw.homestead.com

If you served with 115 we have a reunion every year. In '07 it will be in San Diego. More info at: www.geocities.com/silvereaglesreunion (http://www.geocities.com/silvereaglesreunion)

Also, 115 has a Unit Page at military-dot-com. You'll have to go there to get the address (it's blocked at this site). It's easy to find...military-dot-com, Community, Marine Corps, Search (VMFA-115), or any other outfit you served with and you're there.

Headquarters Squadron MCAS El Toro, 1984-1985.

When we thoroughly impressed the Inspector General (every Marine knows that's not an easy thing to do), the CO offered any of his Marines an out of bounds pass and a hop on a C130 to Hawaii. Several Marines gratefully took him up on his offer.

I was with 2nd MAW, H&S 29, MCAS New River in 1976; 1st MAW, H&S 15, MCAS Iwakuni in 1977. Was also on a Det. to Okinawa (Kadena AFB, if I remember correctly). I have really fond memories of Japan. Lost my way after that, but would love to hear from anyone remembering L/cpl Owens. Specifically, are Lt. Steigman, Sgt. Secrist(Sechrist?), Cpl. Traylor, or Cpl. Schultz out there anywhere?

I am Mike and I was in the Navy. I was stationed in NAS Agana Guam from 1985-1987. I was in a Heavy Metal Rock Band on the island with a Marine from MWWU-1. He came from Cherry Point, SC. His name was Sgt. Ron Benedict. If anyone know how I could get a hold of him, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Please let me know of any way to get a hold of him.

I was with MWSS-274 as a 1345 from 96-2000.

During that time, I hooked up with a MEU (26th MEU SOC) for a Med-float and deployed many times supporting various exercises (CAX, WTI, Roving Sands, Battle Griffen in Norway, Blount Island Command in Norway caves, and local hurricane and downed fighter support.

I then went on to several squadrons as a Career Planner (VMGRT-253, VMA-223, MAG-14 HQ, MWHS-2 2nd MAW Career Planner)....

The Air Wing was very good to me...it was a LOT of work, but I can't imagine working with a better group of people....air or ground, it doesn't matter...Marine's are Marine's :D

I've been trying for years to find one of my best buddies in the Corps, Jose T. Coco-Valdez. He went by "Joe Valdez" for social purposes, and we called him "Coco" for short.

The last time I heard from him was in the early '70's. He was then a Captain, flying 2nd seat in Phantoms, had just returned from his third tour in 'Nam, and had taken over as Avionics Officer of H&MS-31 at Beaufort. (Said if he'd known what a can of worms he was getting into, he'd have stayed in 'Nam).

Internet people finders, even Social Security Death Index, I've drawn a blank everywhere.

Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Ricky!
I was in the avionics shop. Spent time working out of the generator / starter rebuild shed, the battery locker and a lot of time working on the test benches. Since we were classified as "intermediate" level maintenance, if it could be fixed without sending it to O&R in Japan, we did it. The shop hadn't had a test bench jockey for a long time, and since I was really into it, my Staff turned me loose. Made good friends with a guy in supply, so the repair parts came in real fast.

I flew flare missions for 2 and a half months around September of '68. I'm in work, but will check my records when I get home. I have a copy of my flight / strike record.

I must have met you, maybe flew with you, at sometime. I've been trying to find my old photos to post.

As for those two names, I'm drawing a blank. The only one that comes to mind was Sgt Riffle. He worked in the sheet metal or hydraulics shop and was my hut Sgt.

When I cycled out, I was sent to Quantico and ended up in HMX-1.

Hi Silverdollar.....
The stripes you have (no crossed rifles) are the old "Buck Sgt" style and actually mean you were an E-4.
Check out the settings on your "My Info" page.

Hello Ricky:
I was not in-country in 67-68. I was there from just after Thanksgiving 69 until early December 1970. I was an FMF Corpsman assigned to 1stMAW, MAG-16 Medical and I flew combat medevac missions out of Marble Mountain and several other places. I flew from late Feb 1970 until the evening before I rotated out in early December 1970. I earned 12 Air Medals and a Single Mission Air Medal for action during night medevacs on 5 and 6 May 1970.

I do not remember the names you mentioned as I was flying in CH46D's.

I was stationed at MCAS Beaufort, SC during 1963-65. I deployed to GITMO with Trip 3 in 1963 and CARQUALS. I was also in Beaufort, SC in 1971 after returning from Nam.
Glad to hear from you.

:flag: Hi Gunny:
Yes, it sounds as though we probably did cross paths in "Sickbay" in Beaufort, SC or Nam or Le june or Cherry Point. I spent a lot of time with the Corps. I requested to go back to the FMF for my last sea duty tour before retirement but the detailer bureaucrats made me go on a ship. I even pleaded with them to send me back to the Corps but they told me I was in the Navy not the Marine Corps and I said to them "Yeah wanta bet!

Hey,davblay I was in WERS-17. Left MCAS El Toro on of ALL days Nov 13th( a Friday!!) 1967, after checking gear and getting shots at OKI we landed in DaNang(scared to death). Don't know what part of WERS you were in, but I drove a wrecker for the 3rd Echelon Shop. Had " IRON HORSE" on the boom and Confederate flags on the front bumper!

A little side note here....
I am not a winger in the normal sense....what I am is a Marine who spent most of his tour with the Wing...MWCS 1st MAW, H&HS Mcas Beaufort, and H&SH Cherry Point. I never in 11 and half years served with the Grunts...when not with the Wing I served a 9 month tour at Camp Elmore in Norfolk, and 3 years with DCA-Europe in Germany. It was kinda like a sailor who never served aboard a ship.

Night Medevacs were always the most dangerous and we took the most fire from the VC and NVA. My brother Larry, was a Marine and spent 2 tours in Nam. The first was with the original Marine Units that went into Nam in 64 or early 65. I didn't get there until late 69 and flew medevacs almost my entire tour.

Any info would be appreciated.

crate

I was with him and SSgt Leroy Hayes back there in Beaufort. I have not been able to locate either one since I left the service. I will look further and see if we can come up with any info.

Correction:

That might have been Cherry Point back then since Coco was a GySgt and might have just made W.O. I did see Hayes in Danang..I was there for a while then off to Chu Lai.

If you help me, I'll bet we can get this thing 5-pointed before chow...you get the coke bottle and dog leg and I'll take care of the topside.

I read this interesting end to your old squadron...

"And after a final deployment to Karup,Denmark in June 2004, they officially stood down on September 11, 2004. Shortly after this the last CO of the squadron flew the last remaining plane belonging to the squadron (a Hornet) to Quantico MCB where he crashed the plane on its final landing. The aircraft was repaired and it sits on display at TBS."

FuelNCO, I was at Beaufort in '67 until I got the orders for 'Nam, I put in for the day I got there. I was in VMF(AW)333. Saw many 451's take off, as well as the Birds in Our Squadron. The ONLY reason the phantom beat the F-8 was because it had 2 engines vs the 1 the F-8 had. It came from the top. Had to have 2 engines. The F-8 beat it in all the combat tests it had with the phantom. Thats beyond any doubt. Don't listen to people that tell you different. They know this, just want to get a rise out of you. Don't listen to them. I mean the phantom was beat in every test it did up against the F-8. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
