Selective Service and the Draft
Information

Selective Service Registration Federal law requires that men register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. You may do this on-line with the US Selective Service, by filling out a form at any post office, by completing and returning the card you may receive in the mail, by checking the appropriate box on the application form for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA form), or by registering with a Selective Service Registrar at your high school. Women are neither required nor permitted to register. Men who do not register can be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be imprisoned for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment.

The Draft The Selective Service System does not currently have authority to draft men to serve in the military. If a crisis occurred which required more troops than the volunteer military could supply, Congress and the President could authorize a draft. Under current law, a lottery--based on birthdays--would be held to determine the order in which registered men would be called up by the Selective Service. The first to be called (in a sequence determined by the lottery) would be men whose 20th birthday fell during that year, followed, if necessary, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25.

Classification Classification is the process of determining who is available for military service and who is deferred or exempted. Men are not classified at this time. A classification program would go into effect when and if Congress and the President decided to resume a draft. Here is a list of some, though not all, classifications and what they mean:

1-A--available immediately for military service.
1-O Conscientious Objector --conscientiously opposed to both types (combatant and non-combatant) of military training and service; fulfills his service obligation as a civilian alternative service worker.
1-A-O Conscientious Objector --conscientiously opposed to training and military service requiring the use of arms; fulfills his service obligation in a noncombatant position within the military.
2-D Ministerial Students --deferred from military service.
3-A Hardship Deferment --deferred from military service because service would cause hardship upon his family.
4-C Alien or Dual National --sometimes exempt from military service.
4-D Ministers of Religion --exempted from military service.

Student Postponements--The law no longer provides the pre-1971 "student deferment" for which a man could qualify if he could show he was a full-time student making satisfactory progress toward a degree. Under current law a college student may have his induction postponed until he finishes the current term or, if a senior, the end of the academic year.

"Only Sons" Contrary to popular belief, "only sons," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving sons" must register and they can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family.
