CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The first woman to command Camp Lejeune, N.C., has received another distinction. She was named the Jacksonville/Onslow County 2006 Woman of the Year.
Col. Adele Hodges accepted the honor during a Jacksonville/Onslow Chamber of Commerce membership celebration at Lejeune on Wednesday.
“It is truly an honor. I love the Marine Corps. I love this community,” Hodges said. “I think that this is the best community/Marine Corps installation relationship in the world.”
Hodges became Lejeune’s commander last January, replacing Maj. Gen. Robert Dickerson, who became commander of Marine Corps Installations-East.
Dickerson was named the 2005 Man of the Year by the chamber, making him the second Marine to receive that distinction in almost two decades.
Hodges enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1978, after graduating from Southern Connecticut State College. She was commissioned in December 1980 after graduating from Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va.
She is an Operation Desert Storm veteran.
