Sheehan Arrives, Wants Gitmo Closed
HAVANA - American "peace mom" Cindy Sheehan called for the closure of the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as she and other activists arrived here Saturday to draw attention to the nearly 400 terror suspects held at the remote site.
Sheehan is among 12 human- rights and anti-war activists who will travel across this Caribbean island this week, arriving at the main gate of the Guantanamo base in eastern Cuba on Thursday - five years after the first prisoners were flown in.

Hey, look on the bright side. Maybe she'll stay. Note also a tad bit of subterfuge going on here. The dateline is "Havana", NOT "Guantanamo". Meaning, she is in communist Cuberrrr with her socialist bretheren.

If we get REALLY lucky, she'll step on a landmine.

Note also the complete LACK of mainstream media attention being given.

I'm shocked. :scared:

ok, she really does take things overboard sometimes BUT...

have some compassion and be a human being for once

this woman lost her son in combat and it has driven her to the brink of insanity.

I think we should close Gitmo as well.

why the heck do we have a base on Cuba anyway?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I have compassion for valiant mothers and fathers, who are not shrill, screaming socialist harridans making kissy face with Central American dictators (Hugo Chavez) and sucking up to anti American/anti-war protestors.

She does NOT represent those mothers and fathers. She was a long time anti war anti American activist long before her son, who REENLISTED for a second combat tour, was KIA.

"Be a human being for once". You slay me. Give me a substantive arguement instead of insults.

You might just hurt my little feelings. Or not. LOL

This ding dong was insane in the membrane (wasn't that a rap song?) long before Sgt Casey Sheehan was killed in action. Furthermore, because she is 'insane', I'm supposed to let her get away with anything she wants?

Negative, Ghostrider, that pattern is full.

As far as closing Gitmo, fine. Lets close the whole thing down, and ship those peace loving folk illegally detained there to someplace safe and secure. Like Diego Garcia. I prefer that option, personally.

Guantanamo Bay has been an American possession/Naval Base on the island of Cuberrr (that's the way the Kennedy's said it, btw, love that accent) since the SpanAm war. We won it, we kept it. Even after Castro the commie took over.

Crikey, read some history once in awhile! :D

I know the history of it

we now have no reason to be on Cuba and the territory should be rightfully returned, just as we granted the Phillipines their independence in 1946 and Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1999.

Guantanamo Bay is of no strategic value to us, and Castro is no threat to our national security.

I disagree with Cindy Sheehan, but I feel for her because she lost her son

guess I just have a soft heart.

Compassion for sheehan dried up long ago. She has abused her position as an aggrieved parent to the detriment of the war effort. She is doing the work of the enemy. She loves the attention she's getting. I am PO'd at Sean Hannity for even giving her a platform and more attention. The sooner we start ignoring her the sooner she will go away. Per Castro; I lived in Fl. during the crisis; the russians are the only reason castro didn't launch missles at us-he wanted to but the russians wouldn't allow it. Something about a bunch of missles in Turkey pointing at them. Ask any one who had relatives at the Bay of Pigs what they think of him; I used to know a lot of them back then and they weren't fans.

we've done far more wrong to Cuba than Cuba has done to us. I say we normalize relations with Cuba. They pose no threat to our national security and we have been friends with villains far greater than Castro.

Cuban Missile Crisis? Blame that on the Soviet Union

well yeah I would'nt assume that the people at Bay of Pigs would like Castro much, after all they are REBELS lol

Castro would NEVER nuke the US, even if the missiles were completely under his control (and they aren't because the Soviets controlled them), simply because we can nuke Cuba to oblivion 10000x worse than they can do to us.

Of course we had missles in Turkey; that's one reason the russians backed down-of course kennedy gave those up in the "compromise". Blame the russians? castro wanted those missles-he's a nut case and would have used them if they had allowed it. He has done nothing but provide a haven for communist revolution throughout Central and South America, plus aid the drug trade into this country.
Actually, I do think we should have opened up to cuba, we would have destroyed communism in that country by trade (raw capitalism). Unfortunately our politicians, on both sides, did not want to anger a large and vocal cuban community (that voted). There are still cubans down here who talk about going home when the tyrant dies. BS! Their kids aren't going to go, they never lived in cuba, plus there is nothing down there anymore they could claim as their own. We should have killed castro outright or normalized relations with him- either way would have marginalized his existence. Hind sight/20-20

Sun, are you on a college extemporaneous debating team? It appears to me you enjoy the point, counter point intellectual jousting you engage in here way to much, and way to frequent.

I can only speak for myself. Your philosophizing, liberal ideology and controversial questions are becoming more and more irritating, i.e., what's wrong with Castro? Is your head in a vacuum?

I think you know exactly what you are doing, asking questions like that, and making provocative statements, just to stir sh!t up. It causes controversy, and that is being an antagonist. I think it gets you attention, gives you a sense of power (intellectual) and feeds your ego.

That's my belief and I'm sticking to it.

Sorry First Sergeant

it is my every intention to remain tactful as possible and I am not trying to irritate the people on this forum. But I like to put myself in other people's shoes.

I am not that liberal. Yes I am more liberal than you guys are but I am conservative on many issues too. Compared to Arcade and 10th Zodiac, I am more conservative. I support a broad range of candidates that are from both the Democratic Party AND the Republican Party.

As for Castro, the United States and the CIA has attempted to overthrow his rule on numerous occasions, and Castro has not committed a single act of aggression against the US. Please don't cite the Cuban Missile Crisis. That was part of the Cold War between us and the Soviet Union. Cuba was merely a pawn and had no say.

Even today, Cuba poses no threat whatsoever to the United States. Yes, we do not agree with their communist ideology, but it does not mean we should punish their people with the lack of diplomatic relations and trade embargoes.

Iran is our enemy. North Korea is our enemy. Saddam Hussein was our enemy. Al Qaeda is MOST DEFINITELY our enemy. But Cuba is not our enemy.

We should return Guantanamo Bay and normalize relations with Cuba. It is time we stop holding a 40 year old grudge against them like a little sissy.

I have a hard time rendering Castro as "inert". That ******* wanted to put a number of nuclear missles in the mother land. That's not the same as your fireteam getting hit by an IED.

When they pack dirty in his face with a shovel, I'll say he's inert.

I don't think remembering a self-porclaimed enemy of the United States for forty years is unreasonable.

Personally, I believe the United States is to tolerant and forgetful of hostilities committed against us.

Example: Giving Okinawa back to Japan, especially when considering all the American blood that was shed to take that piece of coral. I don't think we should have ever given it back to them.

His continued existence and his "communist paradise" on our very shores comprises a pain in the ass. His willingness to host nuclear warheads aimed at us is not something to forgive or forget. If he could provide a haven for the islamic terrorists without retribution, he would(if he isn't already). His dumping of his mentally unstable and criminals is a pain in the ass. As far as Gitmo goes, it puts us halfway down his throat and he knows it. Why should we cede a base that gives us access to the Caribbean and Central America? As long as castro and his compadres live we will not deal with cuba. It hasn't hurt them greatly as Canada, S. America and Europe trade with them for what little cuba has to offer. The cubans in this country would go nuts if we tried to normalize now, but after el jefe is taking a dirt nap that problem disappears. Aside from a great party town forty five years ago, what does cuba offer us? We really have no need to deal with communists who are doing nothing but living in a perpetual welfare state. If we were less humanitarian we could have embargoed the entire country and starved the government out(unfortunately that would harm the common cubans a lot worse, so we never did it).

If they have nothing to offer; why bother? The embargo only applies to US companies; it's not like we are strangling the cubans, they have trade with the rest of the world.
What makes you think castro would allow free trade style capitalism loose in his (and it is his) country? He has nothing to gain from it except losing control like E. Germany did. I haven't heard him whining about being deprived because we don't have businesses down there. This is really a silly argument.

I work in the agri business and when Castro needs food he just goes to the Dominican Republic and has buyers order it there and the shipments are sold to the Dominican's and then it is shipped direct to them and they reroute it to the Cubans so it all is a big lie about the embargo.
It has been done for years.

How would selling agricultural goods directly to Cuba instead of rerouting it through the Dominican Republic reduce your profits?

I don't see it.

As for feeding the world for free, well Half the world population (about $3 billion people) live on less than $2 a day (and our Federal Minimum Wage is almost $6 an hour !!!!) and 385 million people live on less than a dollar a day.

You know what the problem is? Americans live you and I are so sheltered, are so wealthy we fail to see the suffering that goes on in the rest of the world. While we whine about our Internet connection being too slow, or a flaw in our new big plasma TV screen, people around the world are wondering when they're going to get their next meal !!

Damn right feed the world for free. The US government should purchase all excess domestic agricultural production at market prices and send it all to Africa as aid.

We can pass the cost up to the taxpayers. It won't be much anyway. If we can spend $100 billion a year on fighting a stupid war, we can damn sure send $10 billion a year in aid to Africa.

No I don't think we should lift the embargo, we should shut them down totally but until both Fidel and his equally (if not worse) cruel brother are destroyed the safety of the United States CANNOT be assured. In the spirit of walking the walk because talk is cheap, I've donated $50 to Heifer International, a non-profit humanitarian organization that gives livestock to impoverished communities so that they can sell the milk for income.

Personally I'm a struggling college student, I come from a middle class family and my parents help with the $20,000/year college tuition but they cannot afford to cover all of it. The Reserve Montgomery GI Bill only gives me $309/month for 8 months (I get nothing over winter and summer break)

In both of my bank accounts (the Pacific Marine military one and my one at home) combined I probably have less than $700 and tuition this semester is coming up soon.

But I know I won't starve, I'll always have a roof over my head, and our family likely will not struggle to the point where I have to quit school, and even if we do I can take out loans to continue my education.

The same cannot be said for the billions of people around the world with no food, no education and no hope.

If I can spare $50, hopefully you guys can spare a little something too to make this world a better place:

With the exception of the saharan areas (caused by over farming and poor land management in a large part) other areas have native woods, minerals, tourism (if they were stable enough not to eat the tourists). The land is rich and arable. Native woods and minerals don't generate much wealth.

I can't sit idly by knowing that I did not make an effort to improve the lives of those less fortunate.

It is against my conscience. I've lived in other countries and not a day goes by I don't appreciate the fact that I live in the greatest country on earth - the United States of America. And I seek to show that appreciation by giving back to the people of the world.

I assume from your "Christian" thoughts and behavior that you also feel Saddam Hussein should not have been executed and that we should not have invaded Iraq because "they did nothing to us".

[B]No, Saddam Hussein is a true genocidal dictator. Some estimates have that he killed 300,000 civilians and he got what he deserved.

As for invading Iraq. I supported it at the time. But I was just as blind as everyone else at foreseeing that any occupation of a foreign territory usually results in a fierce insurgency. We were evicted from Somalia and Vietnam, and the Soviet Union was evicted from Afghanistan in the '80s. We should have known.

Maybe we should also allow any other tinhorn petty a$$ed dictator to have their way, too. It is a$$holes who believe that we should leave everyone alone and keep to ourselves that allowed Hitler to come to power and begin exterminating the Jews. What about Idi Amin, was he also guiltless? No, we were right in entering World War II but I wish we had taken action earlier and not watied for Pearl Harbor. I don't know who Idi Amin is, so I cant talk about that one. Kim Jung Il is a terrible person and I hope he dies and North Korea crumbles, but we cannot invade North Korea because if we do, he just might start launching his nukes at Seoul and Tokyo.

This is such a joke. Fidel Castro has never taken any aggressive action against the United States. He never tried to assasinate any US President. But we did all of the above to them. The only crime he is guilty of is being a communist. And that is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. Besides, Castro is not Arab.

If you think Cuba is such a threat to the US, you really need to re-evluate our national security priorities.

And right now our priorities are:

1. Al Qaeda
2. North Korea/Iran
3. China possibly
4. Everything else BUT NOT CUBA.

People like Castro don't give a f*ck about their people, they only care about the power they have over the people they control. If they didn't care about the power they would not kill and destroy any and all opposition to their rule...

I was in Mogadishu for a little bit right after Black Hawk Down. I can tell you first hand that they don't want Our help because they don't want to help themselves.

I'm not asking you to feel guilty. I am proud too to be living here. But I am asking you to feel privileged and to spare some compassion for people who are not as fortunate as you and I. Made strong by sweat and blood huh? You know what? I agree, but you don't think there is sweat and blood spared in Africa?

What about the African cotton farmer who makes a dollar a day laboring in 110 degree heat with a 20 hour work day?

Come on now, we are obviously privileged.

With great power comes great responsibility.

What you should feel guilty about is passsing by children in under-developed and poor communities in your area.

No American has starved to death. In this country, if you are poor you still have access to a free educational system and government assistance which will virtually guarantee you shelter and 3 meals a day.

Many people in Africa are lucky to get 3 meals a week. Some people there will be ECSTATIC to make 6 dollars a day, let alone our 6 dollars an hour minimum wage.

Just because Our country is rich doesn't mean Everyone is rich.

Yeah, but as I said before, poor people in this country have SOCIAL MOBILITY. They can work their way up. They will not starve to death due to government assistance, and they have access to a government funded educational system. Even if the school is second rate, if you do well there are hundreds of scholarships and grants out there that can help pay for you to go to college.

And man that was a very intellectual quote from Chris Rock!

May not be intellectual but its true.

And to let you know you have about 700 dollars more than me in the bank. And I have a good job!! And NO, I don't live beyond my means. So feel guilty about something else besides being born in America

I find it hard to believe you have 0 dollars in the bank right now....but if you say so.

American people are so selfish and your post obviously reflects it. This is not a hit against you, its a hit against all American people, including myself. And this needs to change.

US international aid composes only 0.34% of our GDP, which is the lowest in the world amongst developed nations.

Gentlemen, I believe the core of the matter here is that Sonny is still blessed with a high degree of idealism, as is often the case with people of his age. He is just now starting to view the world around him with a broader sense of responsibility. I remember well being 20 years old, and naive to the ways of the political process under which the world functions. Idealism, in and of itself, is sort of a right of passage, I think. My guess is that when he leaves the nest, puts that $700.00 down on a studio apartment somewhere, and starts having to do for himself, his views will adapt accordingly. Sonny: your views are, in a sense, quite admirable, and your concern for the well being of the world's poor may fuel you to do great things one day. But for the time being, you haven't had the life experience to debate with the likes of some of the people here. Further, continuing to grind the same point in here is futile, and only makes you come across as argumentative. Do yourself a favor and check yourself before you become someone that no one wants to interact with in here. Your point has been made, but no one is buying. Time to close up your sample case and move on to the next porch.

American people are so selfish and your post obviously reflects it. This is not a hit against you, its a hit against all American people, including myself. And this needs to change.

US international aid composes only 0.34% of our GDP, which is the lowest in the world amongst developed nations.
First, who say we HAVE to help undeveloped countries?

Second, I take issue with your claim that the US is selfish. As a single example, US government aid sent to help people recover from the big tsunami several years ago totalled about $900 million. Aid donated privately by American citizens exceeded $3 billion. Both figures exceeds the amount donated by all European countries/private contributions combined by a significant amount.

That was in response to a single event, not what we give overall which far and away exceeds the rest of the "developed" world. You can't compare what the US government gives away of our tax dollars and ignore the private contributions. That 0.34% of our GDP leaves the rest of the world way back in the dust as far as dollar amounts go, but it only reflects "official" money, not private money.

Stop being guilty for being a citizen of the richest country in the world. If it bothers you so much, stop going to college and instead send all of your tuition money to some UN charity so they can "wisely" spend it. You're being selfish spending that money on yourself (using your logic).

As for me, I'd rather the government cut our taxes and stop sending so much to countries with no appreciation for our help.

YLDNDN6- You sir, have hit the nail on the head. And you did it in a tactful manner. I hope SuNmaN will read and consider your post, and then just relax a little.

ok, she really does take things overboard sometimes BUT...

have some compassion and be a human being for once

this woman lost her son in combat and it has driven her to the brink of insanity.

I think we should close Gitmo as well.

why the heck do we have a base on Cuba anyway?

Not trying to be rude here, but is there anything that the US Military does that you approve of?

The diamond mines they have????

yeah sure because the diamonds all go to the people right? Or do they go to rich, white stockholders.

Look at who owns DeBeers - the world's largest Diamond mining company based in South Africa.

Choosing to help the poor in the US as opposed to choosing to help starving people in Africa is like choosing to save a guy with the flu as opposed to a guy bleeding to death on the street.

Save the guy thats bleeding to death first. The person with the flu can get treatment later.

And who says we can't do both??

And if not for DeBeers, a lot more people would be unemployed in Africa.

WE cannot save the world. We are close to bankrupting our own hospitals
and social services just from the millions of illegals in this country
to whom we provide billions of dollars every year in free services,
free education, food stamps, aid to dependent children, etc.

Charity begins at home, let the rich Arab oil barons take care of their
own poor and oppressed. Or how about we stop sending money to Africa that never gets out of the hands of the crooked leaders to the people?

They are part of the problem. As in our Christian Tithing, they are obligated to donated charity also. Except they are donating to setting up extremist schools.

Taking young men that have known nothing of the world, and giving the gift of reading and comprehension. And then twisting it to wrap a suicide vest on them. That is evil.

Thank you Drum, DW and 1stSgt. My parents raised me to know that there are two ways to tell someone to stick a board up their backside. The first is to simply tell them to stick a board up their backside. The other is to phrase it in such a way that they think it was their idea. Tact is knowing which method is called for in a given situation.

Even worse, they start the indocrination of the "Death to Israel, Death to America" program when these kids are virtually babies. I saw a documentary
in which a 3 year old girl was chanting those words as well as calling Jews
pigs and apes. The interviewer questioned her and despite her age, she
seemed to understand exactly what she was saying. What a pity to
posion such young childrens minds with so much hatred of their
fellow man.

Why would he want to see Cuba in ruins you say? How about because he ia a communist dictator pig who has DONE NOTHING TO HELP HIS PEOPLE!!

I got an idea. Let the gummint raise YOUR taxes. Speak for yourself. I have no desire whatsoever to feed Africa, Cubeerrr or any other damn place.

I have come to the conclusion that you are a died in the wool socialist. You just won't admit it.

BTW, how much in taxes a year do you actually pay????

God, you are so full of socialist twaddle it's not even funny.

What are you majoring in, in college, if I may ask?

Again, I ask the question, how much in taxes do you pay a year?

Furthermore, why is it all of a sudden Amerkays problem if the gummints of these countries refuse to take care of their own people?

The Cuban embargo was designed to hurt Castro and his military machine, and to (hopefully) push the people to overthrow his worthless butt. However, it hasn't worked out that way. Still, you would have us recognize a communist regime, just so you and all the other bleeding hearts could 'feel better' about yourselves.

Gimmie an ever lovin break.

Ahhh, but Horselady, you don't understand! It's all the Jooooos fault for all the worlds problems. Of course, the left has issues here as well, because, well, they can't stand to see a strong, US friendly, Middle Eastern country like Isreal in existence. "IT'S THE JOOOOOSSSS!!!"

It's perfectly ok, in their little leftie coffee houses and 'study groups' to bash the "Zionest Oppressors" and blame them, instead of blaming the dirtbags who are teaching their little kids to hate, and hate with an unmitigated passion.

The little lefties have lots in common with all sorts of folks in this regard. The Klan. The Nation of Islam. Al Quieda. The PLO/Hamas.

Yep. They all fit right in together. It's all "The Joooos" fault, you see.

You are obviously just a tool of the "Joo" controlled media, Zionest Occupational Gummint, and probably the Freemasons as well.
