In the official speeches, no one mentioned Haditha. But as the Islamic Prayer Center was dedicated yesterday at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, recent violence in Iraq, including the killing of 24 civilians in the western Iraqi town, allegedly by Marines, was on the mind of some.
Aisha Greenleaf Abdul-Mateen sat in a folding chair behind rows of other folding chairs, listening as Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England and Gen. Michael W. Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps, spoke about the significance of the day -- the first Muslim prayer center for the Marines. She sat there as they pointed to the small white building behind them as a symbol of America's religious tolerance. And she remained there after they finished their speeches, took off their shoes and walked inside the center with a gaggle of journalists in tow.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>"If they would have asked someone like me to say something, they would have got the truth," said Abdul-Mateen, a Muslim and wife of a veteran.
She would have stood at the podium and said that the Islamic Prayer Center was a "beautiful, beautiful thing" but long overdue. She would have said that it shows "equality" and "justice" and "respect," but that those qualities were being lost in the bigger picture of the Iraq war. That the leaders weren't following what God wants.
"If they were," she said, "we wouldn't be in Iraq doing what we're doing -- hurting innocent people, having them take their clothes off and siccing dogs on them, and even what they're doing in Cuba."
Yesterday's ceremony marked the dedication of the building that has been in use by the base's Muslim community since the end of last year. The plan is to build a larger facility by 2009 to serve as a religious activities and family support center. Several who attended the ceremony described it as a positive step in relations with the Muslim community in the United States after a series of reported missteps recently in Iraq, such as the alleged atrocity in Haditha.
"The event was timely," said Ghayth Nur Kashif, an imam who served in the Korean war. "It's not going to be enough, but it's a start."
Lt. Abuhena Saifulislam, a U.S. Navy chaplain and religious adviser to the U.S. Marines, said the idea for the center came last July when he was assigned to the base. Muslim service members and international students came to him for help.
"They started asking me, 'Can we get a place to pray?' " he said, adding that they had been going off the base to Woodbridge and Stafford.
Saifulislam estimates that 30 people use the center, but he's confident that the number will grow.
"As it is known, they will come," he said.
England said 4,000 Muslim Americans are serving in all branches of the U.S. military. He said the center will be not only a space for them but also a place to educate people about Islam. Inside the center, which is mostly a large, empty room, the walls are decorated with educational posters topped with such questions as "Who is Allah?" and "What do Muslims believe?"
"At the end of the day, we are all brothers and sisters," England said.
Hagee said he believes that everyone shares the basic values of respect for human life, for the truth and for personal property.
"The Islamic Prayer center is really an extension of our ethos, this ethos we take care of one another," he said. "We are a family."
Even those at yesterday's ceremony who did not agree with the war and were solemn when talking about recent events under investigation in Haditha agreed that the center was a positive symbol of religious respect.
"This couldn't happen in any other country except America. It wouldn't happen in the Middle East," said Christopher Bell, a Vietnam veteran who started the Muslim-American Veteran Association. "We have our problems, but this is the greatest country as far as freedom goes."

If this was a Baptist or Christian church being dedicated, the howls would be long and loud from the ACLU types about 'separation of church and state'.

What twaddle.

Note that the 'Washington compost', the liberal paper of record in DC, instead of simply reporting the news, adds it's own editorial commentary about Haditha. Another good reason why I don't read their stuff, unless I'm looking for the enemies opinion. Then, it's ideal.

well they're entitled to have their own opinion. we can jsut not read it.

Only in this country would we allow a Muslim worship place to be erected. A faith that belongs to the majority of the enemies we are fighting.

This is the true spirit of tolerence and democracy.

at 0.6% of the US population? I highly doubt it.

I believe...no check, I KNOW that the only true God is Jehovah, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

But I also believe in the freedom of religion as guaranteed in the First Amendment, and I fully support the rights of American Muslims to worship as they please

Quick question Sun and I might be wrong. But isn't true that that minority get what they want instead of the majority. For instance, remember when you could say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. But for some odd reason, a very narrow part of the population got their way? Or now illegals might be getting a chance to collect Social Security after only 18 months of working in the U.S. There are about 20million illegals in the U.S.

Hey bro,

I think we should be allowed to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. When I was in Jr. High in 1999-2000 we still read the Pledge with "under God". I don't know how it is now, I hope its still in place.

Athiests can suck it. I've never had any respect for athiests. Take a look around and see how great the Universe is and if you still want to tell me a greater being (which I believe is Jehovah, someone else may believe another god) did not create it then I think they lack brain matter.

However, the debate about the pledge in schools may be due to the seperation of church and state clause in the US constitution. Since public schools are a government funded institution, it would make sense to seperate religion from such an institution. However, saying "under God" is not going to kill you or force you to convert to a religion. It is too much of the Political Correctedness I'd rather ignore.

Illegals can collect Social Security?? I'm willing to betcha 10 bucks its just a rumor and completely untrue. Because since you need a social security card to legally work here, and since illegals cannot obtain a social security card, how can they collect social security??

My two cents

I may be wrong about the social security thing but I don't think I am.

Thats the thing...they will allow them to use their illgal SScard. It isn't written in stone but it is something the gov't is thinking about doing. It was on CNN the other night. The program was Glenn Beck. I know, wait a conservative program, but it is actually being considered.

But my question to you was Don't the minority pretty much always get their way. Maybe that is what Muslim's are shooting for. Now pun intended.

The minority gets their way through struggles only to recify a wrongdoing upon them by the majority.

A good example is the Civil Rights Movement.

They will not get their way with unreasonable demands.

no. Muslim Americans have not made any unreasonable demands that I've seen.

What you said above will not happen and YOU KNOW IT.

This country has and always will be run by WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants), to think that the 0.6% of Muslim Americans will stage some kind of takeover on our beloved country is akin to Hitler saying that the minority Jews were going to take control of Germany.

Gee I was taught that majority rules are you saying that isnt the way it should be anymore? Gee I thought that the attacks on 9-11 staged some kind of attempt to take over our beloved country didnt you? I think that Hitler was referring to the distribution of wealth and how that may be a weapon in taking over a country. You know kinda like why would a politician spends $200,000.000 dollars of his own money to get elected to a job that will pay him $300,000.00 dollars a year. The rich only spend their fortunes to come richer and thats a lesson learned by living as old as I have. But I do remember when I was your age and knew everything. The only difference was I didnt have your leftest anti american professors conditioning me to their new world order of socialism and anti americanism. Sonny someday you will look back at today and think damn I was a young dumb idiot back then. I didnt mean that as a personal attack on you but rather a statement that I think any older Marine would say about him or herself.

lol

I'll say again as I've said 10000000000000000000 times

MUSLIM AMERICANS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ATTACKS OF 9-11 !!!

Wow if you hate them so much why don't you go kill the next Muslim you see in your city streets??? Yeah have fun with your 25 years in prison.

And you rip on my professors so much. You rip on colleges for being liberal.

Guess what? As I've stated my professors have NOTHING to do with my political opinion. In my year and a half at the University of Illinois, NOT ONCE have I heard an anti-Bush remark come out of a professor's mouth. NOT ONCE have I heard an anti war comment from a professor. And these are POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSORS !!!! Not even ONCE have I ever seen an anti-war protest or an anti-military remark made by someone at my school !! Here it is COOL to be in ROTC, people respect the uniform. I've formed my own opinions without any dsue influence from my professors !

Then you chide on colleges for being liberal. You know what made this country as strong as it is today?? EDUCATION !! Yes ! Secondary and Post-Secondary education !! Educated individuals such as physicists, economists, chemists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, engineers, TEACHERS AND PROFESSORS etc. who contribute their part to this great country daily is what makes it strong !

So before you further despise American colleges and college professors, keep in mind that...umm your CO in Vietnam - he probably had a college degree. Your beloved M-16 rifle, probably invented by someone with a college degree. The first refrigerator - made at the University of Glasgow in England. Medical advances that have saved so many lives during war - University medical research centers around the US.

Kevlar - a bullet resistance material - invented by Stephanie Kwolak, a COLLEGE GRADUATE FROM THE CARNEGIE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY.

I could go on and on and on...but maybe think about all that before belittling college professors for being anti-American, over-liberal and ruining our country.

Because college professors contribute more to this great country than you and I could ever imagine.

SuNmaN-
For someone who is familiar with the teachings of guerilla warfare, the above statement seems rather out of place.
I'd venture to say that somewhere along the line there was collaboration between the aggressors and sympathizers not necessarily linked by birth or region. The collaborator may have been a unknowing participant. Who's to say? 9-11 leaves no room for blanket statements without total irreversible evidence by anyone...including myself.

Well, Sun, we could go on all day about the bennies of a college education (BTW: I have an MBA and I'm a doctoral candidate right now). Education does not necessarily make one smart. I've known a lot of educated idiots and way too many of them work in academia. One or two members of this forum might even consider me to be one of them.

Perhaps your university has a faculty who teaches instead of proselyting the ignorant products of our public education system. If so, you are one of the few exceptions.

I've been around a little bit in this world, seen some things, done some things. I come by my conservative views via my parents, both former Detroit cops (both with college degrees, my mom with an MSW), but my experience AND education has not given me cause to change.

People trying to be "open-minded" are sometimes blinded by the obvious. Islam is not just a religion. It is a political movement of the first order and always has been since the first time whats-his-face claimed to be a prophet of God. Islam is more dangerous than a full-fledged communist threat such as that posed by the Soviet Union or the ChiComs.

The difference is the communists could be rational at times as they were only political. Mixing religion and politics like the Muslims do gives us what we see now - willing to die for God terrorists. Very similar to the Japanese of World War II crashing airplanes into ships and human wave Banzai attacks into massed machine gun and artillery fire. Separate the religion from the politics and we get the Japanese of today. But they had to be stomped into the deck to get their attention on that point. So do the Muslims. Sadly, no one has the courage to do what is necessary.

Christianity was just as bad too, I admit. However, when politics and religion are separated, rational thought can enter. I will not get into the consitutional "separation of church and state" argument as that is specious in any case.

Until proven otherwise, I consider Muslims in America to be the enemy among us. The group has proven themselves to be too untrustworthy. I will reserve judgment on an individual case-by-case basis as I'm sure the Muslims have a small share of their equivalent of liberals who have managed to avoid being killed for that.

I consider our liberals such as both Clintons, Carter, Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, Boxer, Finegold, Reid, etc, to also be our enemy. I just wonder if they are actually so ignorant despite their college educations as to believe the Muslims will treat them nicer than the rest of the great unwashed if the Islamic world gets their fondest wish. A fool's hope.
