BERTHOUD PASS - An avalanche at Berthoud Pass has blocked US 40 in both directions, knocking two cars off the road.

C-DOT initially reported several cars were buried and pushed off the road, however after probing with poles, no cars were found buried and two were found pushed off the road.

The avalanche was 100 feet wide and 15 feet deep, according to C-DOT.

"Our crews said it was the largest they have ever seen. It took three paths," said Stacey Stegman, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

One injury has been reported, according to C-DOT.

Crews have rescued at least six people, she said. They were probing the area for other survivors.

She said some cars were buried in the snow in an area called Stanley near Berthoud Falls between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.

Berthoud Pass, an 11,307 foot pass, is the main route to Winter Park, one of Colorado's largest ski areas and is located 60 miles west of Denver.
