Week 2 - Boot Camp Letter 12-26-06

Hey Everyone! It's Angela again with another update on Aida!!

Myself and Allen (her boyfriend) have now received our 2nd letters from Aida while she's away at Boot Camp.
She sounds like she's hanging in there and just waiting to get letters from all of us!!

(PLEASE Don't feel hurt or offended if Aida hasn't written to you yet, and she may not be able to write everyone, but I know she'll try. She doesn't get too much free time. An hour each evening and 4 hours on Sundays. So just hang in there and know that she's doing her best. She's writing to me and sending the journal entry's because she knows it's the fastest way to get the word out to everyone!! Thanks)

She did say in one of her letters that if you so desire, you can send the mail 'Express', but just waive the signature. That way she'll get the mail QUICK! I hope she got some of it before Christmas as a Holiday treat to pick up her morale.

I know she loves on Sunday's when she gets to go to church and she enjoy's her Senior Drill Instructor. She's also doing better than the last time she wrote, and somewhat adjusting to this experience... although do you ever fully adjust.

She has experienced the notorious and devilish "Parris Island Sand Fleas" They bite all over and leave red bumps and hurt like hell.

She said the cold weather is setting in, however it's the times that she's outside the most that she really loves. When she's running and gets to see the sun rise and hear the birds sing and breathe in the fresh air while getting out of the confining walls of the squad bay. This makes me laugh... and smile, I mean, after all, this is coming from a girl who can sometimes sleep til noon! lol

She says "Tell everyone that I really appreciate the prayers and thoughts and to keep them coming, because I really need them right now. Also, wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas!"

Below is the letter/journal entry from Aida. Enjoy.

Monday 12/18- Week 2

So I've decided that instead of telling about boot camp, that I would write a journal and y'all could read that, plus I need to recap the last week and receiving and all that good stuff.

Week 1 Recap: We got to Savannah Georgia at about 10pm Monday (12/11) night and were met by 2 male Marines who escorted us into a room while we waited for the others to get there. We finally boarded the bus and headed to Parris Island somewhere around 11-12pm. The ride took what seemed like 5 minutes, but apparently it was 45 minutes.

As we started seeing signs, the road turned to one main street and we were surrounded by forest. Some recruits and me were joking around and said that even if we tried to escape we would get lost in the forest, that is assuming we make it past the water.

We got to Parris Island main gate at about 1am and were told to shut up and put our heads down. It was a bit frightening but a short bus ride. I heard the bus come to a stop and the door open and all I could think about was "oh ****... breathe... here we go..." Then appeared 2 male DI's telling us to get off his bus, but he wasn't screaming, it actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We got off the bus and stood on those infamous yellow footprints. Then came the 2 days of no sleep, a lot of tests, medical exams and paperwork. The first couple of days were pretty boring, then Friday we woke up and headed to PT to run our IST (Initial Strength Test) which determined if we got to start boot, or were to be put into a conditioning platoon.

Luckily, I passed it doing a 70sec flex-arm hang, 79 crunches and a 14:20 mile and a half. Then came meeting our DI's and the real yelling.

I've gotten used to it though. We had "Forming" days up until today, it was our last one. So now that you are all caught up. I'll do my daily journal.

Week 2- Monday (12/18)
We woke up at zero dark 30 as usual and got dressed and went to chow. After chow, we came back to the squad bay and did a sick call in which all sick rct's get escorted to medical. I had a check up. It got me away from the DI's. They escorted me to the wrong medical and so a Navy Corpsman put me in a golf cart and drove me to where I was supposed to be. It was pretty exciting. I felt free in a sense for the first time in a while. I saw the Doc who was awesome and NICE! What a change that was. Then came utter shock when my DI appeared to pick me up. I really don't like her and a lot of the girls are also having problems with her but we won't go into that.

After sick leave, I had drill then chow then class with the Battalion Cmdr and then class with the Chaplain. After that, came the same ole, same ole, which is really boring.

There's a road on base called the Blvd to France and I'm assuming it's the main road on base because we aren't allowed near it.

I can't wait to go to the MCX (Marine Corps Exchange) and pick up some things I need. It's pretty crazy how fast we have to do things, but I'm getting better at it. I do miss home and my family and friends a lot, but I'm sticking it out.

Today we did some more drill with our M16A2 Service rifles. It's kind of hard to drill with them, just got to get used to them I guess. I've decided to name him Smit. I don't know why really, it just sounds cool.

Ok, time to get some rest, training days start tomorrow. Oh yeah and the food is really good and made by actual civilians and we get a variety of good food. Ok out!

Tuesday (12/19) - Training Day 1

Today started our training days. My day started at 0 dark 30 and we got dressed and went to breakfast. Actually, I take that back, after getting dressed, the whole platoon got quarterdecked or IT'd (Incentive Training). Boy was THAT fun (sarcastic). Then came breakfast and drill, then afternon chow. Then more drill and then our Military Custons and Courtesies Class, then more drill and chow and drill.

All in all the day went by fast and was ok. This evening, when we got back to the squad bay, we got to hold things up as punishment for a recruit not moving fast enough. That sucked because then we had drill with our M16A2 service rifles after.

I was excited because Smit and I got closer today. We are now like one. I took him apart a couple times and put him back together.

I'm excited for tomorrow, except for the fact that SSgt M. will be on deck, Sgt V. was on deck tonight. Tomorrow we have MCMAPS (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program). Well, I guess that concludes my day.

I've been kinda bummed seeing people receive mail and pictures and knowing that Christmas is coming up. But I will live. I guess everyone's morale is low right now due to the holidays. Ok, bed time, until next time.

Wednesday (12/20) - Training Day 2
Rolled my ankle in PT. Martial Arts was so awesome, did a lot of drill and was lucky enough to ge ta good shower. Our Senior stayed with us today instead of the DI which I am happy about. I thought I would get a phone call home on Christmas but no such luck. I guess things change. Morale is really low. I'm glad to hear that we won't be doing much on Christmas Day, just a lot of square away time and Mass. Don't really have anything else to say right now. End of Training Day 2. 68 more to go.
