U.S. troops kill weapons dealer in raids

The Associated Press

BAGHDAD — U.S. troops killed a suspected al-Qaida weapons dealer and two other people in raids Tuesday in Baghdad, and Iraqi forces detained more than 60 suspects over the past week, the U.S. military said.

Among those captured by Iraqi forces were a suspected “foreign-fighter facilitator” and members of a bomb-making cell, the military said in a statement. The Iraqi raids, backed by U.S. troops, took place north of the Euphrates river and east of Ramadi in Iraq’s western Anbar province, it said.

Iraqi forces also captured three suspects Monday in separate raids near Fallujah and in Sharqat, a town in northern Salahuddin province, the U.S. military said in another statement. The man detained near Fallujah was suspected of giving explosives to al-Qaida in Iraq and kidnapping Iraqi civilians for ransom, it said.

In the Baghdad operation, American forces captured two men who surrendered and another suspect who was wounded, the military said.

Meanwhile, the military on Tuesday announced the death of a U.S. soldier by a roadside bomb southwest of Baghdad. The blast Monday wounded three others, including an interpreter, as they talked with local residents about sectarian violence, the military said.
