Man To Fulfill Sporting Dreams Of Troops In Iraq

POSTED: 3:15 pm EST January 2, 2007
EASTON, Md. -- Baseballs, softballs and Frisbee discs are headed to Iraq after an Easton official heard Marines from the area missed traditional summer games at home.

Easton Town Manager Robert Karge said he heard from his deployed son that a former Caroline County Little Leaguer stationed in the Iraqi city of Fallujah said the Marines missed the American tradition of pickup baseball and softball.

The news sent Karge on a mission to collect sporting goods, new and used, to send to the servicemen.

"I figure you can't have south Caroline County children needing baseball equipment anywhere in the world and not having it," he told The Easton Star Democrat.

Karge will collect sporting goods all month from the Easton Town Office. The donations will be sent to the Marines' Combat Logistics Battalion 5 Engineer Company in Fallujah.
