Injured area soldier
comes home for holidays

Lance Cpl. Corey Smith is on leave from the Marines for a visit home for the holidays and is enjoying his time with friends and family.

The State Line Christian graduate served in the Iraq War and spent some time this week talking about his injury three months into his tour of duty in Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Smith lost a leg in a mortar attack and is rehabilitating at Walter Reed Hospital. He is on leave from the hospital, but is set to return there for more rehab possibly through mid-summer.

He enjoyed joking with friend and fellow State Line Christian graduate Mike Lain and others at a party held Thursday night in his honor at Great Lakes Skateway.

Connie Williams, owner of the rink and Corey's aunt, offered to host the event which was organized by friends and former schoolmates.

Nearly a dozen friends and other family members turned out to visit with him, videotaping him as he detailed the events that led to his injury.

Although he likely will not return to military service, the personal drive to help and defend others that inspired him to join will continue in civilian life, says Ms. Williams.
