2/8 Marines: Bomb intended for Christmas

Staff report

Marines in Iraq seized a weapons cache and defused a triple-stacked roadside bomb they said was intended for a Christmas Day attack.

Leathernecks with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, based near Fallujah in Anbar province, discovered the cache of 1,000 rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition and a sniper scope after stopping a suspicious vehicle. Marines said they were forced to fire warning shots at the vehicle to get the driver to pull over.

“When we saw him coming at us, we shot at the ground and he stopped,” said Lance Cpl. Willie Floyd, a 2/8 platoon leader. “I was very glad to find the scope because I feel like it’s helping something.”

Later Monday, a 2/8 patrol unit discovered a copper command wire in the road leading to triple-stacked fully wired explosive rounds. Marines collected physical evidence, including the trigger device, and detained two suspected insurgents hiding in a nearby house, according to a Marine Corps release published Wednesday.
