Local Marines Take On Different Mission For One Day In Iraq
(WSBT) Amid talk of changing strategies, it's business as usual for the Engineers of Company B. The South Bend-based Marines have been working on construction projects throughout the Anbar province in Iraq. They also search for and destroy explosives.
But a small group of the Marines went on a different mission. The Marines of Company B patrolled an area known as Tourist Town. But there are no more tourists, and the former resort modeled after the French Riviera is now filled with refugees.
The Marines visited a local shop, handed out candy, and took some pictures. They also delivered school supplies and 20 desks they built from scrap wood.
They also built a pair of soccer goals for the kids, to replace the rocks the kids had been using.
While they were there, Gunnery Sergeant Todd Mansfield of Michigan City took a few measurements of the building. The Company B Engineers hope to help the school add another building to ease overcrowding.
