Marines fired cannon salutes Wednesday in honor of former President Gerald R. Ford, who died this week at his Rancho Mirage home.

A single howitzer cannon was fired at the top and bottom of each hour from 8 a.m. until sunset by Battery G, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

Marines of the regiment's 3rd Battalion will fire a 21-gun salute on Friday at Palm Springs International Airport, where Ford's casket will be placed aboard a flight to Andrews Air Force Base, Md., for services in Washington, D.C.

Ford, 93, was the nation's 38th president.
