Tax statements available online a few days early

Tax statements for 2006 will be mailed by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service beginning Jan. 2 but will be available a few days earlier over the Internet for those signed up for the military’s myPay information system.

Availability of the W-2 tax statement needed to prepare income taxes will vary from branch to branch, DFAS officials said.

“Tax statements are available online, allowing customers to view and print W2s,” said DFAS operations director Patrick Shine. “Whether anyone needs the statements to complete taxes or just want an extra copy for their records, the tax statements can be accessed and printed at any time,” he said. “The printable statements are approved by the Internal Revenue Service.”

One form will not be available online. People who have left the service with voluntary separation pay cannot get a W-2 online, but their income statements will be mailed Jan. 4 and 5, DFAS officials said.

Reserve and Marine Corps W-2s will be available before W-2 forms for active Army, Navy and Air Force members.

Army, Navy and Air Force Reserve members can see their W-2s online beginning Jan. 2 and the forms will be mailed Jan. 5-8.

For the active and reserve Marine Corps, the W-2s will be online beginning Jan. 5 and be mailed on Jan. 9 and 10.

For civilian employees of the Defense Department, W-2 forms will be online Jan. 9 and mailed on Jan. 19 and 20.

For the active Army, Navy and Air Force, W-2s will be online Jan. 22 and in the mail from Jan. 23 to 29.

Using the military’s secure myPay system requires having a military E-mail address or a pre-registered personal e-mail address.

The myPay system can be accessed at myPay.dfas.mil.
