Conway puts capital region Marines back in cammies

It’s time for leathernecks stationed at the Pentagon to dust off their cammies and boots.

In a Corps-wide message signed Saturday, Commandant Gen. James Conway directed Marines serving in the national capital region to don the digital woodland camouflage uniform Monday through Thursday, effective Jan. 2. The utility uniform replaces the green service bravo uniform as the uniform of the day four days a week. Service bravos will be worn only on Fridays, the message states.

According to AlMar 54/06, Marines and sailors serving on the green side will wear woodland cammies with sleeves rolled down November through March; when sleeves go up in April, leathernecks will switch to desert cammies Monday through Thursday and service charlies on Fridays.

The guidelines for uniform wear are “intentionally more restrictive” because of “increased public visibility” of Marines within the national capital region, the message states.

Leathernecks may wear their utility uniform — which must “present a neat appearance” — at the Pentagon, Navy Annex or other military facility in the region, according to the new rules. Marines may also wear it commuting to and from home using their privately owned vehicle, with stops along the way allowed on “a very limited basis” — such as an ATM or a fast-food drive-through, as long as they stay in the vehicle. However, leathernecks who use public transportation are not authorized to wear cammies during their commute.
