Armand J. Chauvin, Sr., Sergeant Major, United States Marine Corps Retired, age 59, passed away December 20, 2006, in Diamondhead, MS.
He was born in New Orleans, LA, December 21, 1946, and has been a resident of the MS Coast since 1995. He attended St. Augustine High School and graduated from JS Clark High School in New Orleans.
He was employed by Securiguard, INC. at NCBC in Gulfport, MS after serving 30 years in the Marine Corps. He joined the Marine Corps at the young age of 18, and earned numerous honors during his service. Sergeant Major A. J. Chauvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 12 July 1965. After completing Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marines in Vietnam. In February 1967, he rotated back to the Continental United States and was assigned to Headquarters, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic. After eighteen months on station, he was transferred to Headquarters, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, El Toro. In October 1969, the Sergeant Major once again saw duty in Vietnam, this time with Headquarters, III Marine Division. In the latter part of this tour he was assigned to Headquarters, III Marine Amphibious Force. Upon completing his tour in October 1970, he returned to the Continental United States and was assigned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point, NC. During the next several years, Sergeant Major Chauvin saw duty with Headquarters Commander In Chief, U.S. Pacific Command, Camp Smith Hawaii. Sergeant Major Chauvin was promoted to First Sergeant in November 1980, and assumed the duties as First Sergeant of B Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 1st Marine Brigade, Hawaii. In July 1983, he saw duty with the Inspector-Instructor Staff, Company F, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines in New Rochelle, NY, where he was promoted to his present rank in October 1985. In January 1986, Sergeant Major Chauvin joined Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Tustin. In May 1990, he was transferred to 1st Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Intelligence Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. Deployed with the Group to Saudi Arabia in August 1990, where he participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, rotating with the Group to the Continental United States in April 1991, and joined Marine Aircraft Group 16, in April 1992. Sergeant Major Chauvin assumed the duties as 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Sergeant Major on 10 February 1993. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat "V" and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Raoul V. Chauvin, Sr. and Inez (Prudeaux) Chauvin; grandparents: Raoul Joseph and Cecelia (Diaz) Chauvin; maternal grandparents: George and Louise (Casimere) Prudeaux.
He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Vickie L. Chauvin of Diamondhead, MS and his children: Armand Chauvin, Jr. with wife (Shelley) of Beaumont, TX, Dyke Johnson of Beaumont, TX, Kim Conard with husband (Chuck) of Jacksonville, NC, Shawn Beagle with wife (Elena) of Cornelius, NC and Joshua Beagle of San Diego, CA; one brother Raoul V. Chauvin, Jr. of Harvey, LA; three sisters: Belvia Isabelle of New Orleans, LA, Athalia Piernas with husband (Henry Jr.) of Pass Christian, MS, Aveline Kimbell with husband (Willie) of Los Angeles, CA; one "lil" brother Jack Dugue with wife (Jacqueline) of Sacramento, CA; 14 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and many dear friends. Visitation is on Wednesday, December 27, 2006, from 1p.m. until 3 p.m. at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home U.S. 49 north in Gulfport, MS with services to follow at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Full Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps. In lieu of flowers the Family prefers monetary memorial donations sent to the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society at NCBC, 5301 Snead St., Gulfport MS 39501.
