Cops Help Injured Marine Whose Home Was Burglarized
Responding Officers Are Fellow Marines

POSTED: 7:12 am PST December 21, 2006
SAN DIEGO -- It's the kind of story that can make you angry: A Camp Pendleton Marine who served -- and was injured -- in Iraq comes home to find his apartment burglarized.

The story has a silver lining, though: The Marine called police, and the two officers who showed up were former Marines.

Officers John Carpenter and George Garvey said they were so angry that someone would steal from a fellow Marine that they decided to do something about it. They took up a collection for Sgt. Ishmael Quiroz and his fiancee, Brittany.

"Having both been military members ... we felt we needed to do something," Garvey told NBC San Diego.

The police said that most of the couple's belongings were stolen -- even their baby's clothes.

So far, the police have raised thousands of dollars.

"The officers who helped us out, I really appreciate," said Quiroz. "It's Marines looking out for Marines. That's what we do."

Quiroz said he was on leave when the burglary happened. He has been to Iraq twice and was injured by an improvised explosive device during his last deployment.
