Company B Marines Go on Overnight Mission in Iraq

(WSBT) With insurgent violence a growing problem in Iraq, some local Marines are doing what they can to stop them.

They're from South Bend-based Company B -- some of them serving their second tour of duty there.

South Bend Tribune reporter Fred Dodd and a handful of Company B Marines just got back from an overnight mission.

Their goal was road repair -- smoothing the road makes it more difficult to hide improvised explosive devices.

Corporal Casey Vermillion of Mishawaka drove the grader for this mission.

They go out at night -- after the local curfew, when it's safer and there are fewer delays for drivers.

At one point they spotted a stick of C4 explosives in the road, but Corporal Christopher Yoder of Nappanee quickly determined this one was nothing to worry about.

The Marines are repairing holes left behind by explosives, making sure the holes can never be used to hide another deadly device.

Most of Company B's road repair missions are uneventful, and Wednesday's was no different. That's good news for family and friends waiting back home.
