PEORIA - A former Dunlap man remained in critical condition Monday night after being wounded in Iraq last week when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee.

Lance Cpl. Colt Stovall, 21, has undergone two operations at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., since being evacuated from the Anbar province Thursday, said father Dave Stovall of Pekin.

"I am a bit more relieved today. My daughter (Jessica Stovall of Creve Coeur) and his mother flew out (Sunday) and they got to see him and said he wasn't as bad as they imagined," he said.

Dave Stovall said his son was midway through a deployment to Iraq with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines Regiment when the attack occurred. Colt Stovall, the vehicle's gunner, was thrown from the Humvee, breaking both of his legs and suffering several cuts on his face and burns across his body, his father said.

More than a dozen Marines were injured in the attack, the father said.

Colt Stovall was first evacuated to Germany, where he underwent emergency surgery. After that, he was flown to Walter Reed for two more operations and remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Dave Stovall learned of the attack shortly after midnight Saturday when a sergeant with Colt Stovall's unit called. He said he planned on driving to Washington on Monday night. A truck driver with UPS, he was able to get off work despite the holiday season.

Colt Stovall joined the Marines in 2004 after graduating from high school in Michigan. He went to grade and middle school in Dunlap, his father said.
