MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO(Dec. 15, 2006) -- Service members from units aboard the depot came to the marina equipped with game faces and motivation, ready to compete in the annual field meet for the Commanding General’s Cup on Dec. 8.

The field meet was the last event in the year-long competition.

Coming into the event with an almost 30-point lead, Headquarters and Service Battalion Marines had little trouble taking the cup back from Recruit Training Regiment, who won it the previous year.

"More importantly than whether or not we knew we were going to win, we went in as a team," said Pvt. David Nollola, a Waelder, Texas native and engineer with facilities maintenance, H&S Bn. "We all had to work as one for the win, and apparently it helped us."

First, spectators crowded around barriers to watch Marines, sailors and Coast Guardsmen compete in four-man push-ups and the dizzy izzy--an event where a participant spins 10 times with his head on a baseball bat before running to tag his teammate in a relay race.

Soon after, the audience gathered on the rocks by the harbor to root for their team during the kayak race.

Not even minutes after the water sport ended, competitors and bystanders were back on the grass to cheer on their defenders in the game of tug-of-war that ensued. Roaring ovations were given for every tug and pull as H&S Bn. took the game with seeming ease.

As the rope hit the ground at the conclusion of the competition, attendees of the field meet maintained their positions as the relay race began.

Following the first five events, Brig. Gen. Angie Salinas, commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and Western Recruiting Region, joined the Marines in the egg toss, the competition’s last and final challenge.

"To me it showed great leadership for (Brig. Gen. Salinas) to come out and participate in the egg toss regardless of the fact she was in her dress uniform," said Rachael Dickinson, intramural sports director, Marine Corps Community Services.

Dickinson said the service members on the depot work hard, and it is important to have events like this to show them their efforts are noticed. By coming out and participating alongside the Marines, Brig. Gen. Salinas let them know how much she appreciates their service, said Dickinson.

When the field meet concluded, H&S Bn. came in first, and received the CG Cup trophy and a check for $300 toward the Marine Corps birthday ball and funding other command events. RTR came in second receiving a check for $200, followed by 12th Marine Corps District who received a $100 check.

"Sports and athletic events such as this bring Marines together to work as a complete team," said Col. Matthew D. Redfern, commanding officer, H&S Bn. "Every unit has their mission, but this brought all of them together to work toward a common goal."

After years of flip flopping between H&S Bn. and RTR, the CG’s Cup returns to H&S Bn. for another year.
