U.S. Marines want new anti-sniper systems

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine Corps is investigating "a wide range of counter-sniper solutions," Special Operations Technology reported Wednesday.

"The Marine Corps Systems Command on behalf of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory is in the planning stage of seeking interested vendors" offering new equipment "that can detect and locate, prevent, engage, or protect against enemy sniper activities for testing during the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory's counter-sniper experiments," SOT said in its online edition.

"The Marines are focused primarily on seeking suitable commercial and non-developmental items that can be easily modified to meet existing government requirements to support military experimentation scheduled as: Limited Technical Assessment," the report said.

SOT said performance parameters for proposed new counter-sniper systems would have to "detect and locate, prevent, engage, or protect against enemy snipers." This capability could involve "acoustic gunfire detection systems, infrared gunfire detection systems, or optic detection systems," it said.

"Detection systems with the capability to suppress, neutralize, or destroy the threat will also be looked at," SOT said.

The article said the Marines defined prevention as "anything that will prevent an enemy sniper from being able to make the shot."

"Protection can include, but is not limited to, individual protection to areas of the body that the current flak jacket leaves exposed or individual protection while in a stationary position," it said.
