MobCom sends first wave of IRR recall letters

Marine Corps Mobilization Command mailed 150 letters to Individual Ready Reserve Marines Friday afternoon, calling them to active duty for a period of 12 to 18 months, according to a Corps spokesman.

Maj. Steven O’Connor said this first batch of involuntary recall orders will be delivered to 12 infantrymen, 15 logisticians, 24 communications Marines, 10 artillerymen, 24 engineers, five tankers, 35 motor transportation Marines and 25 military policemen.

As members of the IRR, each of the Marines being called to active duty has already served at least one four-year contract before being placed in that component of the Reserve.

The congressionally authorized call-ups are being made “to fill critical manpower requirements in support of the global war on terrorism,” according to a Corps release in late August.

According to MarAdmin 397/06, IRR Marines “selected for active duty will be judiciously used to source targeted grade and skill shortfalls.”

O’Connor said the Marines will report to MobCom in Kansas City, Mo., in March. They will then have a five-month period to get their affairs in order before deploying to Iraq with II Marine Expeditionary Force in late July.

O’Connor said requests for delays, deferments and exemptions to the recall orders will be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

The IRR is comprised of roughly 59,000 Marines who have completed their active-duty or Reserve contracts. Typically, an IRR Marine’s only duty is to keep Mobilization Command updated on his address and phone number.
