Fitness trail to link Lejeune and city trails

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville city officials marked the start of construction Wednesday on a new fitness trail that will link base and city recreation paths.

The asphalt trail, which will be about 5.2 miles long when finished, will begin at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Onslow Drive and stretch to Camp Lejeune’s main gate, said Rhonda Parker, the city’s planning administrator.

The trail will eventually cross Lejeune Boulevard via a pedestrian overpass out to N.C. 24, she said. It is a joint effort between the city and the federal government, which donated more than 40 acres of right-of-way property for the path.

The $4.1 million trail is being funded in part by a Transportation Department grant worth nearly $1.5 million. The remaining funds will come from the city.

The trail will provide recreation and fitness opportunities for base residents, as well as offer leathernecks without vehicles easier access to the heart of the city. It will be available for walkers, joggers and bicyclists and is scheduled to be finished in the next 12 to 18 months, according to a Lejeune press release.
