A Marine was killed Monday when the CH-53 helicopter he was in crashed just after takeoff in Iraq’s Anbar province, according to the Defense Department. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Master Sgt. Brian McAnulty, 39, of Vicksburg, Miss., was assigned to Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. “There was no foul play or cause for investigation for the cause of death,” 2nd Lt. Jill Leyden, a Corps spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

It was unclear which model of CH-53 was involved.

McAnulty is the second nonhostile Marine death reported in Anbar province in less than a week. Lance Cpl. Cody Watson, a field radio operator with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines, died Dec. 6 after he collapsed from illness, his family and friends said.

The Defense Department released the names of three other leathernecks who died Monday; their deaths were the result of enemy action.

Cpl. Matthew Dillon and Lance Cpls. Clinton Miller and Budd Cote died while conducting combat operations, the Defense Department announced Wednesday. They were assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif.-based Marine Wing Support Squadron 373.
