Free SAT test preparation offered to military community

National Football League players and eKnowledge have donated more than $9.7 million worth of college preparation programs to members of the military community, and they want to do more.

They’re continuing the offer to provide the $200 SAT and ACT test preparation programs free to all active-duty, reserve and retired military service members and their families. This is the second year of the program.

“Due to the overwhelming response by service members and their families, eKnowledge and the NFL players have agreed to sponsor the programs for at least the next few years, and if the demand continues, they are working to make the donation permanent,” said Brandon Chatham, a spokesman for eKnowledge Corporation.

Since the program began in 2005, some 47,095 programs have been requested and shipped, he said. Those who receive the test preparation program pay $9.95 for the cost of packaging, processing and shipping the order.

To request the test preparation program, eligible active-duty, reserve or retired military members should visit the Defense Department Web site www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil, and click on the “Donation: VSG/NFL Players” button at the top left. The Web site will confirm the user’s military status through the secure Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database and then forward the person to the order page for requesting the program. Requests can also be made by telephone at 951-256-4076.

Families can use the program for one year after receiving it. The offer is not authorized for group or classroom instruction; it is only for individual use on laptops or home computers.

“Thank you so much for this opportunity to prepare for the SAT,” wrote one Army sergeant. “There are no classes or programs available for SAT test prep at my duty station. I am active-duty Army so my time is limited.”

That was one of tens of thousands of letters from military families expressing their thanks for the donation, according to Charlie Beall, chairman and chief executive officer of eKnowledge Corporation, in a statement announcing the continuation of the program. The effort is sponsored in part by a group of NFL players represented by the Victory Sports Group.

Among the professional football players who have contributed are Jon Bradley, Scott Young, Garrick Jones, Corey Williams, Jason Radar, Ahmaad Galloway, Dominique Dunbar, Kelly Johnson, Elgin Hicks, Kevin Breedlove, Mark Anderson and Tim Blackwell.
