Engine on Osprey aircraft used by Marines catches fire

Dec 8, 2006 : 2:04 pm ET

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. -- The left engine of an MV-22 Osprey aircraft caught fire after landing at Marine Corps Air Station at New River, a Marine spokesman said Friday.

The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries, Marine spokesman Lt. Col. Curtis Hill said.

The Osprey was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204.

The Osprey had just returned from a routine flight and was on the ground when the fire broke out late Thursday, Hill said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Osprey program was halted in 2000 after crashes that killed four Marines in North Carolina and 19 in Arizona.

The program has since been reinstated and the first deployable Osprey squadron was established in March. The aircraft is scheduled to deploy for combat sometime next year.
