Washington, Dec 7 (ANI): Movie great Clint Eastwood has slammed the contemporary usage of the word 'hero', insisting that people who haven't done anything valiant are also being given the accolade. The veteran director, whose recently wowed audiences with his latest film 'Flags of Our Fathers', based on the tragic tale of the five Marines and a United States Navy corpsman who raised the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the course of World War II. The 76-year-old insisted that not only difficult to be "idealistic" in times that were riddled with wars, what was also disturbing was the current trend to make people 'heroes', even though they might have not done something to deserve the honour. "These are difficult days to be idealistic. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, yet just a few years later we were in Korea, and then Vietnam. Now we're in Iraq. It doesn't help that we're in a period in our history when we make heroes out of people who really haven't done anything heroic," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying. "Now you see 'heroes' in the newspapers all the time, whether it's related to 9/11, a fire department or whoever is coming to the rescue," he added. The Battle of Iwo Jima (Operation Detachment) was fought between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan during February and March of 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. As a result of the battle, the United States gained control of the island of Iwo Jima, and the airfields located there. The battle is famous for the image of 28th Regiment 5th Marines of the United States Marines raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle. Three of the six flag-raisers were killed before Iwo Jima was secured
