JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A Marine combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient belongs to a North Carolina college football team shooting to win its second consecutive NCAA Division I championship title.

Brian Stokes, a former sergeant, is wrapping up his final season of NCAA eligibility with Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Stokes was injured by a roadside bomb in August 2004 during his second tour in Iraq with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines. He is on ASU’s special teams and wears the school’s No. 89 jersey.

According to the school’s Web site, Stokes was an integral member of the team last year on the kickoff, kickoff return and field goal squads. He appeared in 14 games last season, the same year the team defeated Northern Iowa to win the national championship.

ASU plays Youngstown State on Saturday in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division 1 playoffs, which will air on ESPN.
