So this is one of those questions where I anticipate all the Marines in this forum jumping on top of me and telling me not join their Marine Corps...But I'm going to ask it anyway...Some of the stuff that I hear that the Drill Instructors say to recruits sounds really funny. I know that when I get there and they start saying or doing some of that stuff to someone else, I am going to have that uncontrollable urge to just start laughing. I hear that that is what they are trying to get you to do. Any tips on not laughing?

Laugh just one time and I promise you will never laugh at your DI again. They have a way of curing that for you.

It is always funny when it isn't directed at/near you. Once you are there that urge to laugh will quickly disapear.

Some of us have a more difficult time with that than others. I got better, but I was never totally able to stop laughing. In fact, I got thrashed after morning chow on graduation day for laughing at that our heavy said.

If you laugh, you pay. You'll hope you never laugh again. If you're like me, you'll have that experience several times.

Laughing at a DI? Oh man, God help you. You will be in better shape than most at least, if you survive...LOL Practice doing pushups, sit-ups and side straddle hops saying "HA-HA Sir, HA-HA Sir" while the SDI is screaming "Laugh funny f**k, I wanna hear you LAUGH!!!" And I agree with SemperFiMan, I hope you are a loud laugher.

Since this is around the same subject, does the same thing happen to smartasses at boot because I often have this uncontrollable urge to say something or another that is deemed " innapropriate" if you will.

For instance when I was 11 I joined the Young Marines and during my initial boot weekend I was eyeballing a Marine advisor and I saw that he had a wedding band on. SO anywho he noticed me eyeballing and went on the whole skit'' you think im pretty'', ''No so you think im ugly"
Anyhow during this verbal barrage I somehow said if your wife looks anything like you I feel sorry for your children, god forbid you have any

So i spent 3 days flipping deuce and a half tires uphill then downhill whilst the advisor was yelling remarks '' you aint so funny now are ya Rockabilly?'' Sir no sir but your face is''( i was 11 crappy comebacks were a give)

He hated me in boot but we became good buddies afterwards and i still talk to him this day

EDIT: I guess I ansewered my own ?

Make a mental note of it and laugh later. That's my plan.

Rockabilly....why would you even ask that? I doubt you'd last through first phase if you said anything even close to that.

I guess I tried to prove a point in some ways as to what would happen if some kid is a comedian in boot camp, if they did that to an 11 year old imagine what they would do to a 17/18/19 year old young man. And I think its a funny tale to tell. But times have changed and have I , so i dont need to worry about that aspect of boot camp. But thanks for your hospitality[/sarcasm]

Rockabilly, if you say something like that to a DI I fear for your safety.

Go ahead and laugh at your DI. You will be amazed at how much your upper body strength will increase from the extra pushups!

Here is a thought... What would it feel like to have your head shoved back down your neck hole? Because that is likely to happen if you are stupid enough to personally attack a DI. Being a "smartass" in Recruit Training is not so much fun when 40 other guys are paying for your stupidity. If you don't have the self discipline to keep your suck shut, the Corps is likely not a good choice. The DI is the nastiest, meanest, SOB on the planet, and I hold all of mine in the highest regard to this day. They made me what I am today, a United States Marine. They have the toughest job on the planet, making boys into Marines, and they do not take that responsibility lightly. To me it is offensive that anyone would bad mouth or in some way disrespect those Marines. Now pull your panties out, I am not saying that anyone here is doing that, but to do so would show a lack of respect and a lack of class. To every Drill Instructor out there, I say Semper Fi and Thank You, you are the ones who make the Marine Corps what it is today, as you make the Marines of today.

We have Marines present and past that have given their life for their country. You think something is funny? Watch me laugh as I personally escort you to the QD. I guarantee you will be in tears before leaving because of the pain I will put you through...oh wait you wanna give up? OK go back home to your mother, I am not your recruiter this is a real man's game. Not everyone can be a Marine and that is another reason I am proud to serve because punks like you will change and be crying when I am done or you will not make it.

IT WILL BE THE LAST TIME YOU LAUGH. After 1 trip to the QD and you make it out you will then have the discipline to keep your laughter inside.

I don't recall saying anything about laughing at Marines dying. And from what I have heard drill instructors try to get people to laugh so that recruits can learn how to mantain composure. Whether that is true or not I don't know but all I asked was any tips on how not to laugh. That is all.

I haven't met the Drill Instructor yet that would let a smartass get by with anything at all, no matter who it was directed against. Everyone (smartass) I ever had the pleasure (if you want to call it that) of knowing learned very quickly that it is much wiser to shut your suck hole, rather than be in major pain and discomfort for however the Drill Instructor feels like you have earned. In general they not only learned to shut it, it hung with them long after they were out of boot camp...

The Marine Corps is not in the business of catering to wise acres. We have a job to do and it is a d*mn serious one that could get you killed should you choose the wrong time to be a mouth...
