It was a busy weekend for 2,200 members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and many have speculated that they might leave before their early March scheduled departure.

But they’re not going to deploy just yet.

These Marines and sailors from Camp Lejeune, New River Air Station and Cherry Point Air Station completed their pre-deployment training cycle with the traditional Special Operations Capable Exercise in November and a large-scale nuclear, biological and chemical defense exercise in December, a first for MEUs preparing to deploy.

On Saturday those from the 26th MEU were busy checking the condition of living spaces they will inhabit for their standard six-month deployment aboard amphibious assault ships USS Iwo Jima, USS Carter Hall and USS Nashville. They will take possession of some areas of the ships from the Navy’s Amphibious Squadron.
