Documentary maker looking for Marines, hosting casting call

Hollywood's looking for a few good men willing to spend a few months trading fox holes for the makeup chair.

The casting directors behind the movies "The Fast and the Furious" and "Lords of Dogtown" plan to visit Yuma this Sunday to conduct a casting call for a documentary on Marines who have fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

They're looking for about 10 active or former Marines to spend several months getting their stories on film, most likely in some exotic locale such as Morocco or Jordan. Specifically the casting directors are interested in seeing males ages 17-30.

Ricketts said filming will likely begin in late January and end in March. All travel and living expenses for the actors would be paid.

The director behind the documentary, which is still unnamed, is British filmmaker Nick Broomfield. He's produced documentaries including "Kurt and Courtney," "Biggie and Tupac" and "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer."

The Yuma casting call is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Marriott Springs Hills, 1825 E. 18th St. A similar event will be held Saturday in San Diego, running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 1617 1st Ave.

Guys who can't attend either casting events can also send video images of themselves to: Attn. Military Movie, 400 S. Beverly Drive Suite 307, Beverly Hills, Calif., 90212.

This is the same company that last visited Yuma to find military talent for the film "Jarhead." Yuma is one of three casting calls.

"I had to convince Nick that Yuma would be a good place to go," said Dee Dee Ricketts, one of the casting agents. "You guys are such a tight military town. I knew it would be a great place to find people interested in this type of thing."

Ricketts stressed that Bloomfield has no preconceived political agenda for his documentary, which is expected to simply be a collection of Marines' stories and thoughts.

"In addition to what they've seen he's also interested in where these guys come from, their backgrounds," the casting director said. "We know we're going to find some really good stories."
