Businessman digs in pockets for Marines

The Tribune

Danny Simic, who runs Hot Shots World Class Billiards & Restaurant in Pismo Beach, says he can sleep well after a recent trip to Port Hueneme in Oxnard to visit with Marines there and thank them for their support of local children through the annual Toys for Tots drive.

Simic donated a Murrey 6400 pool table, which gained popularity when the model was used in the film "The Color of Money," to the troops. He connected with them through local Toys for Tots coordinator Anita Pomerantz.

"I am proud that I could do something for them, because what they are doing right now is huge," said Simic, who immigrated to the United States from Serbia. "Many of them are just coming back from Iraq, and some will probably go back."

Simic assembled the table in a former office at the base that the Marines will now use as a recreation room.

"I feel for them — these guys are underpaid, exposed to much risk and danger," Simic said. "... Those men deserve something nice to be done for them."

Nativity at the adobe

A group of Nipomo children will re-enact Joseph and Mary’s search for a room in Bethlehem during a traditional Mexican holiday celebration at Nipomo’s Dana Adobe.

This is the first year the adobe’s holiday open house will feature "Las Posadas," which is celebrated in Mexico in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The tradition has groups of children or adults go house to house singing a song requesting lodging. At each house, the group is refused in song until they reach a designated site for a party.

Students from Nipomo, Dana and Dorothea Lange elementary schools — as well as some home-schooled children — have rehearsed the pageant for weeks, said Helen Daurio, director of educational outreach for the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA).

The songs will be sung in English and Spanish, Daurio said. Copies of the lyrics will be available for all to join in.

After the program, there will be a piņata for children and docents will give tours and serve hot drinks and Mexican treats.

The adobe will be decorated with traditional rancho-era adornments, so people can experience Christmas as it was in the early 1850s in California, said DANA Executive Director Kathy Kubiak.

The holiday open house will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at the adobe, 671 S. Oakglen Ave.

The free event is open to the public. Books, tree ornaments, gift memberships and other gift items will be available. Call 929-2606 for more information.
