Im going to get LASIK after I enlist and after Boot Camp. I plan on having a Infantry MOS, so when would be a good time to get LASIK? Would it be the day I get home from Boot Camp(Because Ill get 10 days of Break before reporting to Infantry School), but I dont think that would be enough time to heal from the surgery. Should it be after Infantry School? Then I would have the risk of being deployed and not getting the surgery performed before going to combat. Any personal experiences, input, and opinions will be helpful.

Thanks,
Matt

My advice would be to wait until you get to the fleet and see how it works out. The last thing you want to do is have something go wrong with your LASIK while you're on leave. If you get deployed, then you can take glasses. You would be far from the first Marine to go to war wearing glasses. And there is always a chance that there won't be many deployments happening once you get to the fleet.

Really? Another question. What about contacts? Could I wear them during Infantry School, or would I need to wear glasses? And if I would need to wear glasses, would they issue me Birth Control glasses, or could I supply my own? Also, when and if deployed, could I wear contacts instead of glasses? Thanks

You will wear your BCG's until you get to the fleet.

I had LASIK done in both eyes at the sametime, I could see 20/20 right after it was done. In two days my eyes were healed, your eyes are the fastest healing organ in the human body. Just don't rub your eyes after the surg, you go home and sleep and as you sleep your eyes start to heal them selfs. Your eyes might feel dry, but just use the tear drop eye drops. If I was you I would get it done before Boot Camp, I wish they had it back then when I went in I would have got it then.

SgtHMH, I was considering LASIK before Boot Camp, but the price is kinda high, and the Military can give discounts on LASIK, and depending on your MOS, you could get it for free. I dunno.... I gotta think about it some.

All of the input is helping, thanks

ChknSanwch, don't worry about wearing the BC's. You're free to wear your contacts of own glasses when you're on liberty. Wear the BC's while you're in uniform, and don't worry about it. Unless you're trying to find a boyfriend, it isn't going to matter at all.

I would check with the command once I got to my unit in the fleet. While 99.999999% of the surgeries go fine, there is always a chance that something would go wrong. If that happens, having the OK from your command ahead of time would be a good thing.

Like Sgt. Hoss said, your eyes will heal quickly. I would guess you'd be on light duty for about a week, and then continue the march. Since you're getting it done after Bootcamp just worry about what is ahead of you now.

No Echo Four Bravo, Im not looking for a boyfriend. lol. Im not to worried about the BC glasses, it just that if I have the option not to wear them and still have good vision, Ill take that option. But, Ill take your advice and worry about whats going on now(which isnt much, fortunatly).
Thanks
