‘Willie and Joe’ cartoons featured in Chicago exhibit

Staff report

World War II troops say they related to the trials and tribulations of “Willie and Joe,” two cartoon infantrymen created by Bill Mauldin that appeared regularly in Stars and Stripes.

A collection of the Pulitzer Prize-winning artist’s original editorial cartoons are being featured through Dec. 30 in Chicago at The Jean Albano Gallery. Some images from the exhibition are on the gallery’s Web site, www.jeanalbanogallery.com.

According to the gallery, this is the first comprehensive and public showing of Mauldin’s work since he died in 2003.

In a 1994 interview with Army Times, Mauldin said his personal favorites was a wartime cartoon of a GI with a hand over his eyes, pointing a pistol at a broken-down jeep, about to put it out of its misery.

During his post-Army career, Mauldin worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Chicago Sun-Times.

The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Appointments may also be made by calling (312) 440-0770.
