Still time to mail holiday packages

Thanksgiving is over, but its not too late to get packages to your friends and family overseas in time for the December holidays. The military and U.S. Postal Service have issued deadlines to help you make sure it gets to its APO or FPO address in plenty of time.

Some deadlines for some options have passed, but there’s still time.

As it has done in the past two years, the Postal Service is providing free “Mili-kits” that make it easier to send care packages to service members.

Each kit contains four Priority Mail boxes, six Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, 10 Priority Mail labels, one roll of Priority Mail tape, and 10 customs forms with envelopes; call (800) 610-8734 to order one. Stuff all you can fit into the Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, and send it to any APO or FPO address in the world for $8.10, regardless of the weight.

The U.S. Postal Service also has tweaked its online services to make it easier to mail packages to military addresses.

You can use its “Click-N-Ship” feature, which allows you to pay for postage online, and then print it out. At www.usps.com, click on “Print a Shipping Label.” When filling out the address label, under the “state” pull-down menu, it will give you the option of AA, AE, and APO addresses.

The option also allows you to fill out your customs form online and print it for your package. If you want to go directly to the customs form without printing out postage, go to the U.S. Postal Service online. Click on the APO/FPO version.
