WORCESTER— The local detachment of the Marine Corps League will hold a rally dubbed Operation Stocking Stuffer to prepare gift packages for the holidays to send to area troops serving in Iraq.

The rally, from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in the activity room of Whitney Place Assisted Living, 238 West Main St. in Northboro, is being organized by the Marine Corps League and Tiffanie DiDonato, whose 21-year-old boyfriend, Marine Cpl. Eric Gabrielse, is deployed in Iraq. World War II and Korean War veterans who are residents of Whitney Place and Beaumont Rehabilitation Center will be on hand to stuff the stockings that will be sent to more than 170 area soldiers in Iraq. Soldiers recently returned from Iraq will also attend the event, which will feature a bagpiper, singers and refreshments.

Area residents are being asked to donate the items that will be used in the stockings, including magazines, deodorant, medicated foot powder, novels, new and used CDs and DVDs, powdered hot chocolate, beef jerky and Crystal Light pouches.

The items can be dropped off at Whitney Place in Northboro, or before Nov. 30 at Whitney Place at 3 Vision Drive in Natick.

The idea to send gifts to the troops developed after Ms. DiDonato approached New England Division 4 Life Liaison Officer Michael T. Gilchrist in July for help on a project. She explained to him that Cpl. Gabrielse’s unit’s morale was low and she was seeking ways to boost it. Out of that discussion came a rally that was held in August and Ms. DiDonato decided she wanted to expand the effort.

“Let’s take the holidays to the troops,” she suggested, and it wasn’t hard to get others on board.

“Our residents and staff community here in Northboro are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this wonderful program in support of our troops now serving in harm’s way,” said Resident Director Darrold Endres of Whitney Place, where Ms. DiDonato also works.
