Activists credit An Inconvenient Truth with getting the public talking about global warming.

Film Description

Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Mr. Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way. "Al Gore strips his presentations of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style, and by the end has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message," said Guggenheim. An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share. "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore.

I've often wondered if Al Gore is any kin to Don Quixote. I am as yet unpersuaded that man has much control over global climate.

I wrote a thesis on the subject in college and found, among other things, that the Earth roughly undergoes 10,000 year cycles of natural warming and cooling. The Earth is now nearing the end of a 10,000 year warming trend and, if history repeats, within 2,000 years will enter another ice age.

I also found such tidbits as 200 million years ago, the polar ice caps didn't event exist, and at least one time in the past the average temperature on Earth was some 14 degrees warmer than now. And the global warming advocates are going bananas because the Earth's average temp has increased a degree or so during the last 100 years.

Back to the polar ice caps, 200 million years seems a long time, but when you consider the Earth is 3.6 BILLION years old, 200 million is not much more than an eyeblink.

The global warming advocates always promote the idea that the Earth's climate was an absolute constant until the advent of the Industrial Age. It wasn't. The climate has forever been in a state of continual fluctuation.

A question I always pose is, take the entire Earth. Subtract the areas covered with water. Subtract the polar ice caps. Subtract the uninhabitable/uninhabited areas. Subtract the non-industrialized nations that produce no potentially harmful emissions. What percentage of the Earth's surface is actually covered with entities whose activities might impact the climate?

My sermon for the day.

Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll

My opinion, for what it's worth-most of what they talk about will begin impacting in about 50 -100 years, according to their voo doo science. In fifty years I figure to have been dead for around twenty of them-so, I DON'T CARE! When people try to sell me something with a "lifetime" warranty now, I tell them "at my age that ain't too impressive".

crate78- My research findings correspond with yours. I began dabbling on this topic in about 1968. I think Gore saw a magazine article once somewhere, and decided "the sky is falling!" He should have stuck with "inventing the internet!"

Here's what you need to do- stop heating your home, stop driving your car, eat only what you can kill with technology up to a crossbow(made of wood) and then eat your kill raw. Finally stop breathing-CO2 ya know! It won't make any difference but you will feel better. Unless you can figure a way to stick around for a thousand years or so and learn to control the tidal currents and jet stream you won't impact the Earths' engine. The worst we might do is cause a nuclear winter and the earth would heal itself in time. Humans are arrogant in thinking we can cause global warming or cooling, short of nuclear detonations, we are no more than a pimple on the earths' ass- we might be an irritant, unattractive and pesky, but we don't affect the operation of the universe.
:p
BTW, Zodiac, what makes you think you have a shot at heaven? Marines are only allowed to gaurd the perimeter from the more undesirables-they ain't letting us in! We'd give the place a bad reputation!!!!!

Patton & St. Peter

Most of you know that Patton was a well known Army General. What you may not know is that Patton hated Marines. As a matter of fact, he hated Marines so much that when he died and went to Heaven, he had only one request of St. Peter before entering: "St. Peter" said Patton "I am very happy to have made it to heaven, but before I come in you must tell me if there are any Marines in Heaven. I'm sick of them. They were always outdoing my Army troops and making us look bad. They always got all the credit as the best fighting force on earth. Now I want to spend eternity in peace, without Marines!" St. Peter chuckled slightly and said, "Patton, you don't have to worry about that. Marines are too wild and crazy for Heaven. We can't have them here, they make too much noise and cause a lot of trouble." With that, Patton gave a sigh of relief and went on in to Heaven. He decided to take a tour around to see his new eternal home. Patton saw all the wondrous beauties and was smiling and whistling. Then he turned the corner onto Main Street and he saw it. He became furious and went running back to the gates of Heaven. "St. Peter!" cried Patton "You promised me there were no Marines in Heaven, but I was just on Main Street and I saw a Marine standing tall and proud in his Dress Blues and shiny shoes. Right there in front of my own eyes!" St. Peter chuckled to himself and said, "Patton, calm down, that's not a Marine, I told you we can't have them in Heaven. That's God, he just thinks he's a Marine."

The earth’s engine ocean currents were stopped once before by a great body of water that formed from a melting glacier over the <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:place>Midwest</ST1:place>, the remnants of, now called the <ST1:place>Great Lakes</ST1:place>. This large body of cool water broke through the <ST1:place>Saint Lawrence Seaway</ST1:place>, spilled into the <ST1:place>Atlantic Ocean</ST1:place>, and cooled the earth’s engine, the warm currents. The consequences shut down the engine and an ice age followed.

<ST1:place>Greenland</ST1:place> can and will stop the earths engine by its melting ice mass and an ice age can begin within as little as 10 years after.

There has been a fair amount of ice ages in the last 650,000 years but the carbon dioxide levels have never exceeded 300 parts per million like now!.

http://news.mongabay.com/2005/1124-climate.html

The more carbon dioxide the higher the earth’s temperature. Carbon dioxide levels as of March 2006, shows CO2 levels now stand at 381 parts per million.<O:p></O:p>
<O:p></O:p>
British efforts to combat climate change have focused on preventing carbon dioxide levels rising above 450 parts per million, equivalent to a rise of 2C. If the world warms by more than this, many climate experts believe fragile ecosystems will be pushed beyond their "tipping point", triggering runaway global warming.<O:p></O:p>
