Moving Company Helps Marines Deliver Toys

When you're needing to collect 40,000 toys in just a couple of months you'll take any gift someone has to offer.

And rarely does the U.S. Marine Corps face a challenge it can't handle.

But when the Marines at the Harlingen Reserve Center had more than a dozen pallets of toys someone was donating to Toys 4 Tots they wondered how to get them from Brownsville to Harlingen?

The folks at Parker and Company, a distribution warehouse for maquiladoras in Brownsville had lots of toys. They had pallets filled with small toys for needy children given to them by Omni Globe, a Matamoros maquiladora.

"One of our customers has an excess supply of goods and he asked us to dispose of them and when we saw that they were toys for kids we said let's donate them to the Toys 4 Tots," said Parker and Company representative Steve Muschenheim.

The problem arose on how to get the toy filled pallets to the Marines Harlingen office.

"When the company called they originally said they had three pallets and we were pleased with that," said U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Shama Hernandez. "But when I called to confirm the location they told us they actually had 13 pallets. So that kind of blew us away. We had no way of transporting it. That's where Channel 4 stepped in."

KGBT turned to Perrin Ramirez, the owner of Gulf Moving Systems in San Benito. Ramirez generously donated two of his trucks, drivers and lots of help.

Tuesday morning the moving company showed up with their make believe sleighs and loaded up the pallets.

"This feels great, great. It's the right time of the year for it. We've given them to them with plenty of time so they can get the toys out to the kids," said Muschenheim.

The Marines haven't counted the toys just yet, but they estimate there are at least three thousand toys.

"They will get put to use. It's not anything that's going to sit in our warehouse. I'm pretty sure the children will get a lot of enjoyment out of it," said SSgt. Hernandez.

The willingness to help from so many companies will make this a much better Christmas for so many children.
