Board to consider nominees for top enlisted Marine

A board will convene next month to consider who will replace Sgt. Maj. John Estrada as the next sergeant major of the Marine Corps.

A Nov. 17 Corps-wide message from Commandant Gen. James Conway announced the Dec. 16 board, which will select “the most qualified” nominees — at least five — to be considered as the 16th sergeant major of the Marine Corps.

Sergeants major competing for a nomination must fulfill the board’s prerequisites by Dec. 14, the message states.

Estrada is staying on until his replacement his named, despite the fact that the sergeant major of the Marine Corps traditionally leaves when a new commandant comes in.

By staying into Conway’s term as commandant, which began last week, Estrada is repeating the model set by Sgt. Maj. Alford McMichael, who stayed on as sergeant major after Gen. James Jones handed the reins of commandant over to Gen. Mike Hagee in early 2003.

Hagee retired last week.
