Tarawa vets to be honored at Lejeune

Staff reports

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Marines did in three days what an imperial Japanese rear admiral said couldn’t be done in 100 years.

Leathernecks with 2nd Marines will honor the actions of those who took Tarawa on Nov. 20, 1943, during the 63rd annual Tarawa Day Commemoration Ceremony on Tuesday at Lejeune.

The ceremony will kick off with a memorial service at the Protestant chapel on base, which will be followed by a live-fire demonstration, where veterans can fire weapons and share their experiences.

The lead companies on Tarawa lost 45 percent or more of their men. The Marines secured the island in 76 hours, during which time more than 1,000 leathernecks and sailors were killed and more than 3,000 were wounded.
