Artillery/Infantry

I finished DEPS yesterday and ship for boot camp Jan. 15th and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the artillery field. The only thing I wanted to know was, I talked to friend of mine who's about to ship on his third tour of Iraq and he said if I wanted to see any action that infantry was the way to go but I've been reading some stuff and apparently if artillery isn't being used too much they send those guys in to run patrols. If I went artillery, is there a good chance I would be on patrols every now and then, could it be requested or would I spend most of my time on a base outside all the action. Just trying to get an idea of what I want to do for the next 4 years because I want to see action but I dont want to be kicking in doors everyday. Any input is greatly appreciated.

You must realize by now that ALL Maines are basic riflemen, regardless of MOS. Even if you are in a "rear area" MOS, you can and will be tasked to perform other duties, especially in a field of combat. You will be trained to do this at Boot Camp, and at MCT. I have a friend at work whose son is on his third tour and has an Aviation MOS, and he routinely escorts convoys so that the 0311 Marines are freed up to do what Marines with that MOS are trained to do. That's why every other MOS other than 0311 is a SECONDARY
MOS. Not trying to scare you, but giving you a fair warning. If you're not prepared to do this, you really need to reconsider your decision on joining the Corps.

I'm ready and willing, I just wanted to know what to expect. The only reason I didnt go for 0351 was because my entire family and friends convinced me not to worry them that much but this something I cant help, so I'll be glad to get the action. I appreciate the info though, it was what i was wanting to hear.
