Two events help children of Marines receive scholarships

A local businessman recently held two events to assist children of United States Marine Corps with college scholarships.
Peter Morley, owner of Safeguard Business Systems in Hazlet and a Red Bank resident, is also the chairman of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation of New Jersey.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is a public nonprofit corporation operated by volunteers and professional staff. The foundation raises money for scholarships for children of Marines, former Marines or Navy Corpsmen who served with Marines who are pursuing higher education and whose parent has been injured or killed in the service of our country.
On November 10, the chapter held a luncheon for the 231st birthday of the Marine Corps. Marines and friends of Marines gathered at McLoone's Pier House, Pier Village, Long Branch for the event.
Morley and Jim Curley, a Shrewsbury resident and owner of Jim Curley Pontiac-Buick-GMC, Lakewood, hosted the luncheon. A $5 donation from the cost of the luncheon from each of the 46 attendees was donated to foundation, totaling $230.
Vice Admiral Paul G. Gaffney II, the president of Monmouth University, West Long Branch, led those in attendance at the luncheon in the Pledge of Allegiance. The birthday cake was cut, by saber, by the oldest Marine present, Jerry Palaia, and the youngest Marine present, Lt. James A. Curley III. Morley received permission from the Commandant to make three attendees honorary Marines, William H. Creamer III of Rumson, H. William Mullaney of Ocean and Arch Laird of Rumson.
On Thursday, October 12, the New Jersey chapter held their eighth annual golf outing at Deal Golf and Country Club, Deal. Even though there were cloudy skies, the rain held off and 140 golfers were able to enjoy a day of golf at either the Deal golf course or the course at Hollywood Golf Club, Deal. Before teeing off, the Quantico Marine Corps Band from Quantico, Virginia, performed on the first tee.
"It was a historic event," Morley said. "There had never been a Marine band appear at a golf course in Monmouth County before."
After golfing, the participants were joined by their spouses and gathered in the clubhouse of the Deal Country Club for a dinner buffet. The 6th Motor Transport Battalion, Red Bank, presented the colors at dinner. In attendance at the dinner was Lenny Newaid, a scholarship recipient who attends Rowan University, Glassboro. His father died recently from Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War.
The golf tournament raised over $50,000 from donations for scholarships. "I just want to thank my co-chairs, Eugene Harcsar, James Morrison and Jamie Pavlis and the board of trustees for making this another successful year," Morley said.
To date, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation of New Jersey has collected $80,000 for the year, with the campaign coming to a close in December. For more information, call Pete Morley at (732) 264-9275 or visit www.mcsf.org.
