Leading Murtha On

DEAR JOHN
Potential incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has thus far declined to make phone calls on behalf of Rep. John Murtha's run for Democrat leader, a decision that has some Murtha supporters angry. "She's already publicly supported him, but when it comes to actually twisting some arms for some votes, she's sitting on her hands," says a House Ways and Means Committee staffer, whose boss is supporting Murtha for his anti-Iraqi war position.

That position is the only reason Pelosi released the surprise letter on Sunday supporting Murtha, and it was after she has spoken with Democrat advisers who assured her that it appeared current whip Rep. Steny Hoyer had locked in a majority of the caucus for his own candidacy.

Hoyer's people informed the advisers that Hoyer had commitments from 20 or 21 of the 41 incoming Democrat members, as well as the majority of the caucus, seemingly locking up the leader job. "They [Hoyer's people] seemed to think it was strong enough majority for it not to shift too much because of the letter either way," says a Democrat leadership aide. "Hoyer's people were taking this in stride, that this was something Pelosi had to do to help herself with the MoveOn and Cindy Sheehan types, not because she really wants Murtha in that chair."

GATES OPEN
According to Capitol Hill sources, Democrat leadership in the Senate indicated to the President that they had no objections to the nomination of Robert Gates to replace Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

Look for a vote by the full Senate to take place perhaps as early as the second week of December. Hearings on Gates are slated to begin the first week of December.

"I wouldn't say it's a done deal, but it's pretty close," says a Democrat leadership staffer. "There seems to be consensus to move the nomination through the process and get it done."

Murtha, Majority Leader?

By Roger Wm. Hughes
The Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are about to create a worse scenario than when Republicans elected Tom DeLay Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives.

They are coming close to electing Rep. John Murtha Majority Leader.

Abscam Murtha is well known for his earmarking of budget bills and, at best ,shady deals with friends. There are hospitals and gymnasiums that bear his and his wife’s name back in Johnstown, PA., because of Murtha’s robbing the Defense Budget.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington have named Murtha one of the most corrupt individuals in politics today.

The election of Murtha to Majority Leader would give him unfettered access to the manipulation of untold sums of taxpayers’ dollars. It would also send a clear message that the Democrat corruption machine will go full tilt from the jump start.

Murtha's blatant cronyism in the past has shoveled millions of Defense dollars to his brother, close friends and colleagues:

$20 million to his brother, Kit Murtha, in 2004
Millions to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's nephew
Millions to PA Rep. Paul Kanjorski's kids

Maybe, it is because Murtha shuffled millions to Pelosi’s nephew that Murtha was endorsed by the Speaker of the House designate. It is clear that electing Murtha to this high position would be a giant windfall to Republicans.

There may be a silver lining for Democrats in Pelosi’s endorsement because it did not call on others to join her in voting for Murtha. It may be her sneaky way of knifing Murtha in the back in his race against Rep. Steny Hoyer.

The real burden of Murtha’s lies to Democrats is in his protestation of innocence in the late Abscam scandals. This is sure to be a constant drag on the profanity-riddled, hot tempered Murtha. There are no amount of union goons who can get him out of this mess as they have in the past. Recently, the much hidden FBI sting tape of Murtha has come to light and is available for all to see -- a greedy, conniving character negotiating a deal that would leave him with as few fingerprints as possible to the bribe he was tying to navigate through intermediary pay offs.

Far worse will be when the Abscam Howard Criden take-down tape is released featuring Criden directly saying, “Murtha is ready to take the $50,000 bribe.”

Democrats’ tenure as a majority ruling party will be cut short if Murtha is in any way involved in a place where he can move money around.

Leadership and the name Jack Murtha is a oxymoron. Lets just hope that Nancy stabs him in the back and it doesent happen.
