Conway to become commandant today

By Beth Zimmerman
Staff writer

Lt. Gen. James Conway will receive his fourth star and become the 34th commandant of the Marine Corps during a ceremony at the Marine barracks in Washington, D.C., today.

Conway, who is the operations director of the Joint Staff, previously commanded Camp Pendleton, Calif.-based I Marine Expeditionary Force through two tours in Iraq.

The current commandant, Gen. Mike Hagee, is scheduled to retire later this year.

He turns over a Corps whose “future has never been brighter,” Hagee wrote in his birthday message.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Maj. John Estrada, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, is expected to remain in his position, at least for a little while. Estrada told Marine Corps Times in September that he would repeat what his predecessor, Sgt. Maj. Alford McMichael, did three years ago by overlapping transitioning commandants.

Estrada has worked with the incoming commandant before, when Conway commanded I MEF and Estrada was the sergeant major for 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
