Official e-mails to include digital signatures

By John Hoellwarth

The Corps is changing your official e-mail settings to include a digital signature on everything you send from a government computer, according to a Nov. 7 Corpswide message.

The change goes into effect Nov. 29. As soon as it does, Marines won’t be able to alter the content of e-mails when forwarding them, and “the sender cannot deny sending the e-mail,” according to MarAdmin 534/06.

The message states the new policy is a response to the Corps’ vulnerability to “phishing” and “spear phishing” attacks on its network.

Phishing is a mass e-mail campaign used by hackers to solicit personal information from Marines in general; spear phishing is defined as “targeted attacks on specific high-value individuals within an organization,” the message said. “This type of attack occurs through what may seem as official e-mail” from fellow Marines.
